It’s devastating to see another pillar of women’s esports support forced to put operations on hold.
The ecosystem is crumbling, not due to lack of interest, but due to lack of infrastructure and stability.
As with many areas of life (health, scientific research, education, etc.) when a wider industry/economy begins to struggle, initiatives that specifically support women’s lives, ambitions, and careers are always the first to be cut. I am not pointing to BIG in this comparison, but to the wider women’s ecosystems/leagues/competition in esports that is no longer adequately supported.
When the infrastructural support is withdrawn, organisations, teams, and individual women lose the resources that are needed to readdress the imbalances in esports. It’s sad to see BIG Equipa have to pause their operations in this way.
Women’s esports doesn’t exist to be a Tier 2 circuit, it exists to finally provide value for the women who are constantly rejected from, denied entry to, or ignored in the mainstream ecosystem.
Those who cry about a perceived “biological skill gap” fundamentally misunderstand why we see so few women at the top of esports.
It’s not biological.
A dick and all that comes with it is not helping you play video games better.
Women are simply denied opportunity, respect, and the time needed to build their skills.
It takes time to reset the balance. Unless those who influence the mainstream ecosystem wake up and help remove the barriers women face, we will still need women’s circuits. We will also need programs like BIG Equipa to receive the resources and environment they need.
We don’t all have resources, but we can still voice the needs of women as loud as we can.
ALL Women deserve better.
