We met with @Genera_PR CEO Winnie Irizarry and his team to discuss ongoing and future projects to increase baseload generation and secure an affordable, reliable supply of energy for Puerto Rico. Last year, through the collaboration between the company, Governor González-Colón’s administration, and support from the U.S. Department of Energy, the island successfully restored 1,200 MW of generation capacity—a major milestone that has helped strengthen grid reliability.

We engaged with ambassadors and legislators allied with the United States, strengthening bilateral dialogue—including with Acting Consul General Gilberto Minaya of the Consulate General of the Dominican Republic in Miami. The gathering also brought together leaders in foreign policy. It was an honor to converse with former Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen—a friend, the first Hispanic woman to serve in the U.S. Congress, and the first woman to chair the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Today, at the Heritage Foundation’s Miami Security Forum: Charting a Course for Caribbean Basin Security, I highlighted how Puerto Rico plays a pivotal and strategic role in our national security. Alongside the President of The Heritage Foundation, Dr. Kevin Roberts we discussed how our geopolitical location and capabilities position the island as a key asset to protect the region, bring stability to the Caribbean, and advance our nation’s interests.

Today, we honor the life and service of Captain Ariana Savino, a United States Air Force pilot who tragically lost her life in the line of duty aboard a KC-135 Stratotanker during a mission in Iraq. Her career reflects the honor, courage, and dedication of the many Puerto Ricans who serve with distinction both on the island and abroad. Her legacy endures through her service and the example she sets for future generations. Those who knew her describe her as “a mentor for Latino youth,” “a source of positive energy,” and “deeply honored to represent her Puerto Rican heritage.” We share in the grief of her family and loved ones during this profound loss. May she rest in peace. We are grateful for her exemplary service.

Alongside Carlos Santiago, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Health Insurance Administration, we met with members of MMAPA’s leadership team to discuss ongoing efforts to secure Medicaid funds and an increased FMAP, while we continue to comply with program requirements and integrity measures to safeguard resources for beneficiaries on the island.

Today we broke ground on the reconstruction of PR-181, a key roadway connecting the metropolitan area to Puerto Rico’s southeastern region. Joined by Florida U.S. Senator Ashley Moody, we announced an investment of $11,986,396 in federal funding to rehabilitate 17 kilometers of roadway between San Lorenzo, Gurabo, and Trujillo Alto. The project includes repaving, drainage improvements, thermoplastic pavement markings, guardrail installation, and erosion control measures to enhance roadway safety for our communities. — Hoy colocamos la primera piedra para la reconstrucción de la PR-181, una vía clave que conecta el área metropolitana con la región sureste de Puerto Rico. Acompañada por la senadora federal de Florida, Ashley Moody, anunciamos una inversión de $11,986,396 millones en fondos federales para rehabilitar 17 kilómetros entre San Lorenzo, Gurabo y Trujillo Alto, incluyendo repavimentación, mejoras de drenaje, marcado termoplástico, instalación de guardrails y control de erosión para fortalecer la seguridad vial de nuestra gente.

It was a pleasure to welcome U.S. @SenAshleyMoody to Puerto Rico and thank her for visiting and learning more about the reconstruction of PR-181. This project includes $3 million I secured in 2022 as part of my FY2023 Community Funding Projects while serving in Congress, along with an additional $8.9 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Working together, we will continue delivering the federal resources needed to strengthen Puerto Rico’s infrastructure and improve road safety for our communities. ——— Fue un placer recibir en Puerto Rico a la senadora federal por Florida, Ashley Moody, y agradecerle su visita para conocer de primera mano los avances en la reconstrucción de la PR-181.
