Cambalache Power Plant Unit 3 Returns to Service in Arecibo
Following the identification of areas requiring attention during a combustion inspection, repairs were conducted on key components of the gas turbine combustion system at Unit 3 of Cambalache Power Plant in Arecibo. The hot gas casing was sent to Hughes Technical Services (HTS) workshops in the United States for rehabilitation.
The hot gas casing contains and directs hot gases within the gas turbine, and is critical for maintaining efficient and safe flow, as it withstands high temperatures and protects the unit's internal components. The works additionally included quarterly environmental audits as part of the process.
The unit had been offline since May 2025 and resumed operations on March 16, 2026. It currently operates in peaking mode, meaning it activates during periods of highest electricity demand to reinforce the grid, delivering up to 78 MW when needed most.
We extend our gratitude to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for their critical support and funding of this $3.4 million investment. Their commitment to strengthening Puerto Rico's electrical infrastructure and advancing grid modernization has been instrumental in making this essential project a reality.
We also recognize the work of the employees and contractors whose technical expertise made this repair possible, contributing to the reliability of Puerto Rico's electrical system.
