A Baltimore mother working three jobs thought her son was on track to graduate. The school kept promoting him. Then she learned the truth. In four years at Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts in West Baltimore, he passed three classes. He earned 2.5 credits. He failed 22 courses. He was late or absent 272 times. His GPA was 0.13. The school promoted him anyway — from Algebra 1 to Algebra 2 after failing Algebra 1. From English 2 to English 3 after failing English 2. His class rank was 62 out of 120. Nearly half his classmates had a GPA of 0.13 or lower. In four years, one teacher requested a parent conference. It never happened. No one told his mother he was failing. The school’s response was a two-page statement explaining what should have happened. He was moved back to ninth grade. She pulled him out. Enrolled him in an accelerated program. He graduated in 2022 with mostly A’s and B’s. That was one student. One mother. One accelerated program that happened to work. His school still operates. The district around it has not fundamentally changed. Baltimore City Schools received a 38% funding increase since 2017. Chronic absenteeism district-wide runs at roughly 45%. Academic proficiency in Algebra 1 sits at approximately 9%. The school didn’t fail him because it lacked money.

@dsawyer People indulge over much in wishful thinking-and sometimes their wish is to have it confirmed that reality is as ugly and horrific as they suspect it to be.

One of life's little ironies: People who are generally correct are rarely listened to. People who are almost always wrong are frequently listened to. I noticed this problem with my parents (one was very sharp, one was kinda checked-out, but we kids always listened to the checked-out one). I have yet to find a context where it didn't crop up sooner or later. Something in human nature loathes wisdom, it seems.

When Pavlich pressed on Communist USA flags at the rallies, on the DSA advocating violence, on Iran war powers—Levin deflected every time. No answers on why 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇-𝐳-𝐛 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐬 show up at their “democracy” marches. No answers on ICE. No answers on January 6. The “No Kings” movement claims to defend democracy while marching alongside communists, waving terrorist flags, and lying about crowd sizes by a factor of 600. 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭.

@AntiCommieBecca Same for right wing people and far right propaganda. It’s mainly Gen X that fall for stuff, because they had record amounts of lead in their system as kids. What else can you expect from a generation with double digit IQ points.

@reason The federal government should not have the power to restrict our movement. They took that power—and now they are abusing that power. By all means, return airline security to the private sphere. But, until we do, stop letting the DNC and RNC shut us down.

@JamesCappleman @JohnStossel Honestly? No. We founded a whole nation on controlling the authoritarian impulse. Looking back, this was one of our epic failures toward that goal. It isn’t “nice” to “focus” on people’s rights. It’s job one to guarantee them.

@JohnStossel It's also important to realize that we were in the middle of a pandemic that we knew little about, and hospital ICUs were filling up with dying patients. It's nice to focus on people's rights, but this was also about saving people's lives. That counts for something, right?

Remember the start of the pandemic? Cops chased people who paddled in the ocean, sat alone in cars, or played catch outdoors. Swimmers were ordered to wear masks in pools. It’s important we don’t forget how AUTHORITARIAN politicians are eager to be:

Is it possible that the grief is, in fact, the worst after the funeral, after all the people have gone home, after the body's been cremated, when time moves slowly and you have no idea what to do with yourself (or why you feel 100 years old)?
