Large private vehicles offer minimal safety benefits for their occupants while causing a tenfold increase in fatalities for occupants of other vehicles, and for pedestrians and cyclists. In less than 6 years, large vehicles & excessive speeds have undone four decades of progress.

@_Murphy_Dan In 2008, after US election, Obama administration was lobbied by the automobile industry to approve oversized vehicles or SUV as part of business revival. @POTUS44 approved the legislation in the name of "improving" road safety.

Remember, when it comes to the actual likelihood that a vehicle crash will occur at all, AND whether the consequences of a crash are serious, or even deadly, or not, speed is ALWAYS a factor. Including when the legal speed limits are currently too high. #SpeedKills #VisionZero

It's time for leadership, not more delay on AvenueRd safety imprvments (Bloor-StClair). Why separate cyclist(May 28)+pedestrian(no date) debates on the finished plan, unless goal is to divide supporters, empower opponents? Must we wait for another death? @DianneSaxe @JoshMatlow

#StreetDesign tip: To use a bikeway, people need space to remain clear of other people and objects. And different devices—like cargo bikes—require different amounts of space. When possible, bikeways should be wide enough for all users to operate and be passed comfortably.

Cycling along a main road near Utrecht. The light turns red but it sensor detects I'm approaching on a bike so turns back to green and makes the cars wait longer

@sachasayan @jen_keesmaat Still the dumbest idea of Toronto's car history. Seriously! There is not a single space in Toronto without a car. Let's cover the whole city with the car and we live in space or an underground tunnel.

@jen_keesmaat To be clear: I didn't mean as additional roadway space. I'm referring to shunting gardiner/lakeshore traffic towards the rail corridor on a deck, freeing that existing space for parks. I'm aware of induced demand.

The problem with creating more space for cars is that the downtown - and other urban areas - function better with more efficient forms of mobility that use less land, like bikes + walking. If you increase ways to get more cars downtown you just generate more gridlock in the core.
Sacha Sayan@sachasayan

@jen_keesmaat Has anyone ever discussed decking the rail corridor for car traffic? I feel like that would be so much a best-case use of space.

That trope about suburban housing as "cheap" or "affordable" is just lazy at this point.

@PasternakTO @VisionZeroTO I have three kids walking to two different schools in Scarborough. I am not afraid of them being abducted, I’m afraid of them getting run over. My oldest sons friend was struck last week at Brimley/Lawrence, while crossing at a lighted intersection. #scarbTO

Wearing high visibility clothing or reflective gear is a key part of keeping everyone safe, including pedestrians, construction workers, cyclists, police officers and crossing guards. Let's make @VisionZeroTO work. #Toronto #TOpoli

Councillor Lai defends giving pedestrians reflective arm bands, saying “I don’t think we should blame anybody” for pedestrian injuries. I dunno, feels right to me to blame the people carelessly operating heavy metal boxes hurtling around at high speed. thestar.com/news/gta/2019/…

@PasternakTO @VisionZeroTO Shameful... same councillors who have not had guts to lower speed limits making ageist gimmicks for safe streets. #ZeroVision. As chair of Infrastructure @PasternakTO should be BUILIDING NETWORK of protected bikeways. No more blah blah. Either save lives or be partly guilty.

I decided to completely re-draw and augment that great @NIOSH Hierarchy of Controls diagram. Those guys in Copenhagen did a version awhile back but I wanted one with plainer language, consistent with the way we talk about street safety.
