Anthropic gave us a superpower with Claude Fable 5. The U.S. government took it away. Claude Opus 4.8 does not feel the same anymore. Fable 5 will be back and I'm expecting that Anthropic will keep it on plan to make up for this mess.

All the “this model reached Fable level” talk is nonsense.
No model on earth is close to Fable right now. Not Opus 4.8, not GPT-5.5 Pro, not GLM, not Kimi, not any of the strongest open-source Chinese models. The gap is not small. It is massive.
I used Fable for three days, and it did things in one prompts that I couldn’t get done for months with Codex, Opus, and open models.
Fable doesn’t just answer. It thinks ahead. It understands the product, the user, the direction, the taste, and what should exist before you even ask for it. Most other models still feel like tools. Fable feels like a real builder.
So when someone tells you a new model is “near Fable level,” they are either lying, farming engagement, or they simply don’t understand the gap.
Will others reach it and eventually surpass it? Of course. That’s how this field moves. But today? No.
With Fable, we touched the sky. Then we came back to earth with everything else.

The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We've updated the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, replacing SWE-Bench Pro with Datacurve's DeepSWE benchmark - the swap lifts Codex with GPT-5.5 (xhigh) above Claude Code with Opus 4.8 (max), while the newly released Claude Fable 5 (max) in Claude Code debuts at the top DeepSWE, built by @datacurve, writes its tasks from scratch rather than adapting them from public GitHub issues or pull requests, so no model has seen the solutions during training. That matters because SWE-Bench Pro, the benchmark it replaces in our Coding Agent Index, had grown gameable, with some models recovering the fix from the repository's commit history instead of solving the task. The swap reorders the index: Codex with GPT-5.5 (xhigh) rises from 65 to 76, overtaking Claude Code with Opus 4.8 (max) at 73. Claude Code with Fable 5 (max), which enters directly on the refreshed index, leads at 77. SWE-Bench Pro had been flattering some combinations and penalizing others. More below.

Across Claude products, new sessions will run on your selected default model or Opus 4.8, and existing Fable 5 sessions will end with an error.
On the Claude Platform, requests to Fable 5 will also return an error. Please update your integrations to other Claude models.
