THE CREDIT FOR IPL BELONGS TO JUST ONE MAN: LALIT MODI  I was a critic of Lalit Modi mostly for the brazen hubris he once had; there was a condescending attitude with which he dismissed criticism, especially from the genuinely concerned traditionalists who were worried about the future of Test cricket once T20 became a cash cow, and overwhelmed the classical form of the game. There was also a shocking disregard for core governance from the man who curated the business model of the IPL: Lalit Modi was a man in a hurry.  If IPL franchises are getting dizzying valuations, and the popularity of the league continues to rise exponentially, the full credit for that goes to Lalit Modi. Credit needs to be given where it is due. From the franchise owners, TV rights holders, cricket players and the fans who are clearly besotted with the summer fiesta, they owe Lalit Modi a big one.  It is a poor commentary on our investigative and criminal justice system that the man cannot return to India to see the successful sports start-up that he created which is now attracting global private equity investments. Sorry Sanjiv Goenka; it is not Jay Shah ( even he must be hysterical at your adulation of him), but Lalit Modi, for all his faults, who is the mastermind behind the IPL. I feel compelled to speak some truths about Madhu Kishwar today. I first got introduced to her in 2014 through a journalist from Delhi. After that, we spoke many times. After Modi became Prime Minister, she once told me during a conversation: “I traveled across Gujarat for months and worked hard to write books that built a positive image of Modi. Honestly, I should have been sent to the Rajya Sabha, but instead, someone else was sent and made a minister.” Later, in 2018–19, when the Karnataka Congress government sent me to jail, she told me: “You worked so much for the BJP, and what did you get in return? Jail. At least now, stop praising Modi on Postcard and social media.” To that, I replied: “A swayamsevak never works expecting rewards. Moreover, I work for an ideology.” In 2019, when I received an invitation to Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, she was upset that she didn’t get one. The last time I spoke to her was in 2021. The reason it ended was because she told me she would introduce me to a Muslim from Kashmir who could fund me. My final words to her were: “I am a born Sanatani. I am not someone who shifts from left to right and then towards ISI like you.” After saying that, I unfollowed her that very day. Now, seeing that the movie Dhurandhar shows some positive aspects of Modi, it seems to have angered her or perhaps ISI supporters are funding it as well.

Why should we want to be in this peace negotiation when one side has got a reckless leader who can do and say whatever. How can anyone trust his next step? Why should we fall into a trap? I don’t have one bit of a problem if Aatankistan is referred to as a dalal. That is what that nation is. But I certainly have a problem with the way India took sides in the war, belatedly reached out to Iran and now finds itself nowhere in negotiating peace in the region.

And by the way, mediation and dalali need to be understood. Mediation is to bring two sides closer so that they can talk to each other and sort out issues between themselves. Dalali or Brokering is to take asks of one side to the other and vice versa and keep going back and forth till the agreement comes and then get money from both sides. So Jaishankar has said the right thing.

That Pakistan has got a regional edge over India as a mediator in the US - Iran war is misreading the situation. Pakistan has a defence agreement with Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Crown Prince has hardened his position on Iran and wants the US to continue its military operations in order to remove Iran as a future threat to the region. He foresees Iran’s regional hegemony if Iran’s power is not decimated. Pakistan is fearful that the Saudi Crown Prince may invoke the defence agreement and embroil Pakistan in the conflict with Iran. Saudi experts have begun invoking this agreement and even Pakistan’s nuclear umbrella. Pakistan therefore has a powerful incentive to avoid the worst and propose mediation to appear as a honest broker and claim that it is not taking sides . Pakistan’s mediation offer is in some ways a diplomat act of desperation. Siding with Saudi Arabia would mean siding with the US and Israel against Iran which would have major domestic consequences too. Let us therefore not lower our own dignity by arguing we have lost regional standing by the US countenancing Pakistani mediation over India’s. Other than this, Trump will not give any credit to a mediator as this would imply he could not handle the situation on his own and on his terms. His ego is unmanageable. Moreover, if we offered mediation with Iran we risk opening the door for him to offer to mediate between India and Pakistan. Let sleeping dogs lie.
