@igrantubc I'd be happy just to be left alone to kill myself - WITHOUT the government banning all of the most reliable and humane methods.

"concluding you have a right to be left alone to kill yourself is different from saying you have a right to be helped by others — and in this case, by the NHS. Waxing lyrical about freedom does not give us an adequate defence of the “help” bit." archive.ph/Yc6rz

@PeterTatchell Which of the amendments do you think they should drop. Protection for disabled, poor, depressed. This bill is badly written, initial safeguards watered down, no Royal College supports it. The Lords is actually doing the job it is supposed to do.

For the Sunday Times today, a long read on contradictions in state-sponsored suicide provided by doctors: neither freedom nor true mercy, but pretending to be both. My book on the issue comes out next week thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

The religious right are using the same woke disability justice arguments as the activist organisations. They are the ones who devised this strategy to begin with. I've interacted with all sorts of people on this subject, and the religious right wingers always trot out socialist talking points, to conceal their true motivations.

@existentialgoof @KootenayGreg If you think the arguments are the same, you've clearly only actually interacted with the religious right about MAID opposition, not disabled people.

Had a discussion about MAiD tonight. A guy said if he caught some terminal disease, he’d want MAiD to be an option, long before being bed ridden. After some discussion we found out the biggest anti-MAiD people are anti-vaxers. The my body, my choice people. Ironic

@TylerStack @KootenayGreg The people on the right are making the same arguments as the disability advocates. They came up with those arguments, in fact. Forcing people to stay alive in agony doesn't do anything to advance disability causes. It's pure crab mentality.

@KootenayGreg 1. There's much less opposition to MAID in terminal cases. 2. Much of the opposition is based on non-terminal "Track 2" MAID coming from marginalized disabled people who are very well informed. 3. The people on the right you refer to are less informed.

@AudreySuffolk @dmclellan2024 But by your definition of "coercion", everything short of an egalitarian post scarcity utopia would be coercive. And until our civilisation reaches those sunlit uplands, it is the innocent who must be held hostage.

@dmclellan2024 In order to achieve genuine agency you need to remove all forms of direct and indirect coercion ( which arguably not funding necessary adaptation is a form)

This is why many disabled people are rightly concerned about Assisted Dying. If AD is funded and available but a wheelchair ramp isn’t, what does that say about the attitudes towards disabled people?
Spin Decoders@leith1076

"Gauthier, who has been trying to get a wheelchair ramp installed at her home for the past five years, testified on Thursday that a caseworker told her that they could give her assisted dying, even offering to supply the MAID equipment for her." ctvnews.ca/politics/artic…

People should be allowed to have their own standards, even if that causes offence to others. Just because I can only afford a mortgage for a small house, doesn't mean that other people shouldn't be allowed to have larger ones in case it causes me resentment. Likewise, just because many disabled people want to live, that doesn't mean that those who would prefer to die shouldn't get a choice in case that choice makes someone who wants to live feel resentful, or "devalued".

We understand very well what you are saying. You would rather be dead than disabled. What we don't understand is why we'd respect your demand for #assistedsuicide because of your fear when it would endanger disabled people whose lives are already devalued.
Dstephenh@dstephenh99

@AberdareNic @historykev @fleurmeston I’m not sure why people find it so hard to understand that to many of us the loss of control to the point a stranger has to wipe your arse for you is utterly abhorrent and not an acceptable outcome we are willing to endure.

@dstephenh99 @AberdareNic @historykev @fleurmeston Some people live perfectly happy lives like this. Many of us can’t comprehend the value you lay on ‘wiping your own arse’ compared to other things life has to offer. It would be great if you’d stop demeaning other people.

@rljcoelho @mickeyamery @ABDanielleSmith More likely to be no care and no MAiD. People will just have to suffer so that people like yourself can feel better about the fact that you aren't doing anything to help them.

@852852hk @by__brittany Technically, suicide is legal, but it is not a legal right. Which is what the problem is. If people were already able to access reliable and humane methods and were granted legal protection against suicide prevention, then the government program may never have been needed.

🚨🙏🏼 Danielle Smith is tightening MAID laws in Alberta. ONLY for those nearing death. No MAID for mental illness. Because maybe… just maybe… people need support, not a system that offers death at their lowest moment. Why is that controversial?

@edmontonjournal Liberal Nazis love killing. It started with abortion—now they’re coming for your grandma, your depressed cousin, anyone with a pulse and a signature. MAID….“Medical assistance in dying,” they call it. It’s straight-up government-sponsored murder with branding. Evil.

Children and Albertans struggling with mental illness deserve protection, care, and hope, not MAID. Yesterday our government introduced Bill 18 to prohibit MAID for minors and for vulnerable Albertans whose sole underlying condition is mental illness, while strengthening oversight around every request to ensure MAID remains a true last resort. @PadDawg @ABDanielleSmith So because you need the nanny state to treat you like a 3 year old and protect you from yourself, that means that all Albertan adults need the same? Or how about you just make yourself a ward of the state if making medical choices for yourself is so terrifying?

@ABDanielleSmith As someone who has suffered from anxiety in my life at times, I 💯 agree with Premiere Smith on this 1. Therapy is a cornerstone in getting back on track. Those mental storms come and go. Take it from someone who knows. I've been there. Im better now than ever. There is hope

Doctors wouldn't have to be involved at all if the government allowed reliable and humane suicide methods to be legally available through other channels, rather than treating people like infants. So your argument fails on every level. You want the state to be actively violating bodily autonomy by impeding people from ending their lives.

@Doug_YYC @FreeAlbertaRob It is forcing doctors - it's making some doctor to do it to your body. Like limb removal - bodily autonomy is not the right to make someone else do anything to your body that you want them to do. It's really not that hard to understand, Doug.

Why are some on the right so obsessed with treating grown adults like 3 year olds who have to be kept safe from themselves? What does it really matter to you if some stranger decides that they don't want to be alive any more? Why is your judgement more important than theirs, when they are the ones who have to live that life?

@The_Syrups @prairiecentrist People should be allowed to make that choice for themselves. They don't need you to infantilise them and protect them from themselves. If you think that you need the nanny state to make your medical decisions, then go ahead. But don't take away the choices of others.

@prairiecentrist Such intelligent commentary! I guess you’re okay then with those in mental distress making sound choices? Or the elderly when their children continually remind them how much of a burden they are? We shouldn’t look out for the vulnerable. Time for you to FO!
