Professor Stephen Kotkin, in his multi-volume biography of Stalin and elsewhere, has rejected the common historical view that Stalin’s ideology was merely "skin deep" or a cynical tool to maintain his personal power. This is the evidence he has presented: 1. Declassified archival documents show Stalin and his inner circle spoke in the same Marxist categories (e.g., "proletariat," "class struggle," "bourgeoisie") in top-secret meetings as they did in public propaganda. 2. Stalin pursued policies like collectivisation which were economically ruinous but were required to eradicate capitalism in the countryside. 3. Stalin’s extensive reading and markings in his personal library of communist texts. He was constantly returning to the "touchstone of Lenin’s writings" to interpret global events. Naturally Kotkin's view is not universally accepted.

For the third year in a row, the Ortega-Murillo regime has banned public Easter celebrations in #Nicaragua, prohibiting processions and surveilling worship inside churches. This is part of a broader crackdown on religious communities that has seen clergy exiled, imprisoned, and stripped of citizenship, and faith-based NGOs shuttered. These actions violate fundamental freedoms of religion, expression, and assembly. Democracies must speak out and press for an end to this repression.

According to @IranRights_org, at least 9 political prisoners were executed by the regime last week. Hundreds more remain behind bars, with new arrests ongoing. 🔴 The Judiciary’s Media Center announced that the death sentences of #MohammadAminBiglari and #ShahinVahedparast, two imprisoned protesters linked to the January 2026 protests in Tehran, were carried out this morning following confirmation by the Supreme Court. The Judiciary alleged that the two individuals played a role in "attacking a classified military site, destroying and setting it on fire, and attempting to gain access to the armory." 🔸The case of these prisoners was presided over by Judge Abolghasem Salavati in Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, where the death sentences were issued on February 7, 2026. Mohammad Amin Biglari’s lawyer had previously objected to serious ambiguities regarding the "confessions" attributed to his client, calling them into question. This case was initiated following a fire at a Basij base in eastern Tehran. As several other defendants in the same case are being moved to solitary confinement, concerns over the fate of the remaining convicts continue to grow. 🔸With the execution of these two protesters, the Islamic Republic has executed at least nine political prisoners this week alone.

HRF condemns the assassination of Guinea-Bissau pro-democracy activist Vigário Luís Balanta and joins @UNHumanRights in calling for an independent international investigation. HRF condemns the spate of brutal extrajudicial attacks on critics of Guinea-Bissau's military regime that have taken place in recent months. The impunity that has followed the attacks points to state-aligned intimidation to silence dissent.

Under international humanitarian law, attacks on objects “indispensable to the survival of the civilian population” are prohibited and may constitute war crimes. The law also stipulates that collateral civilian harm from strikes not be "excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated." The destruction of power plants could lead to widespread blackouts and impact hospitals, water treatment facilities and food supply chains. Agnes Callamard, secretary general of Amnesty International says: "Iranian Civilians will be the first to suffer from the destruction of power plants and bridges. This is exactly the kind of ruthless behavior I’ve been talking about: a regime that shows no regard for human life, willing to put children and ordinary citizens directly in harm’s way to serve its own interests. Iranian state TV shows the Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, Alireza Rahimi calling on students, artists, and athletes, people of all political stripes to form human chains tomorrow around power plants. This is being framed as a protest against Trump’s threats to target critical infrastructure. The regime is openly encouraging civilians , including children, to place themselves in danger as human shields! Deliberately putting children in harm’s way is not new. They have been recruiting children for years. During the Iran–Iraq War, the regime sent children to the front lines, giving them symbolic “keys to paradise” and telling them martyrdom would bring reward. Instead of safeguarding its people, this regime has repeatedly treated them as expendable tools to be used whenever it suits its own survival.

America imposes sanctions for corruption and human rights abuses. I’ve always found it strange we don’t have a sanctions program targeting environmental harm. Chinese fishing armadas, Russian mercenaries, and cartel miners are ravaging irreplaceable habitats. And the profits fund activities that directly threaten our national security.
