There’s been some calls to return to the traditional written exam in the wake of misuse of AI in university assessments, but this doesn’t go hard enough imo, I think they should bring back the medieval monastic DISPUTATION

Just one fun fact. 1941-1943, the military dictionary project kept tabs on draft lists and poached professors of foreign languages after they were drafted.
They stole a French philosophy prof out truck maintenance - unit was *mad*. He was translating manuals for them!

@cdutilhnovaes Say there's a disinterested AI who replies to a ques. via argument. It doesn't care if you believe it or not. It can't try to influence, it just informs. There's "rationl argument" but not influence. Wouldn't it be non-propagandistic & allow for the distinction, on your criteria?

I'm thinking of writing a paper arguing that there isn't really an essential difference between so-called rational argumentation and propaganda, contra people like Plato, S. Stebbing & J. Stanley (although Jason's position is more complicated). Here's my argument 👇

@lastpositivist I have no real opinion on Sowell's work, but how much nuance ought one expect from a meme? Surely this was said in a context of a better defense or at least defended better elsewhere. The "applause line" is what made it to twitter. (No?)

There is some nuanced point to be made re the greater permissibility of self denigration leading to an imbalanced worldview that's in the area of what Sowell said. And I'd bet if he wanted to he could say it. But when push comes to shove he consistently chooses the applause line.

This is the kinda frankly stupid line by which Sowell continually under sells himself. He's actually smart and interesting, but stoops to this kinda ra ra culture war line with depressing frequency.

@ArthurCDent I strongly suspect you have considered this, but HGTTG, like Dune, had multiple adaptations, and are both quality pieces of work in their own ways

Am just watching Dune for the 3rd time (IDK if that’s kinda embarrassing). Anyway, I think I’m going to plant my flag and say it seems to me the best Sci Fi book adaption to cinema that has # ever been done. However, I have a bad memory and am open to counter arguments.

If I wanted to make a top 10 list of ineffective altruism, where would I start looking? I don't mean scam orgs that have a legitimate cause but take money and do nothing. I mean orgs that take money and spend it on a cause, but its low impact or the benefits go to well-off people
