BioForge turns 31 today. I've been heads-down on OpenBioForge - here's an uncut playthrough showing where things are at. Early combat, hit detection, dynamic effects, and more. #OpenBioForge #BioForge youtu.be/7CMTDYt2_nQ?si…

@Chelnov18 Thanks! The original scripts are transpiled into C# and compiled at runtime using Roslyn. The intermediate C# can optionally be written to disk and modified, which is useful for debugging and future modding.

@openbioforge This is great progress. The game is slowly emerging. When it comes to the scripting, did you write a new interpreter for the original scripts or convert them into a modern scripting language?

@joschelboschel Fair point, but I’d rather get it to a state I’m happy with first. It’ll happen.

@openbioforge You should publish it, even incomplete. For your project I only see advantages. What keeps you from releasing it?

Today marks 30 years since BioForge's release! From playing it in '95, reverse engineering in the 2000's, to recreating its engine - check out this anniversary showcase of OpenBioForge, bringing this DOS classic into the modern era. #BioForge youtu.be/YZFhfYX1uVk?t=1

@joschelboschel Thanks! The plan is to open source it, but not until it’s further along.

@LeShokunin Definitely on my radar! Experimenting with various approaches including contextual moves. Will likely offer configurable options so players can choose their preferred style.

@openbioforge Honestly an option that just removes most of the moves and simply has a couple of moves would be a better default. I mean it works for Virtua Fighter haha. Ofc you could have a different move on second attack for example, or based on direction. Likely to feel more natural, no?

Experimenting with native analog gamepad support in #OpenBioForge! 🎮 Let me know your button layout ideas in the comments (keep in mind fixed cameras, and over a dozen attack types). Excuse the amateur phone recording 😅 #BioForge #GameDev

@LeShokunin Controls have definitely had attention, including gamepad support and better physics-based movement. Working on various options for combat enhancements - initial goal is faithful recreation with QoL improvements.

@iamghideon Incredible offer! Fair warning - we'd need to create the detailed 3D model first. What you see on the "monitor" in the image is pure AI generation, not an actual asset. I'm no 3D artist, but I see that's your expertise!

@openbioforge OMG thank you for this, I have just learned of this project from Reddit. Bioforge is my most favourite childhood game ever, I have completed it like 30 times. Been since finding any related content for years and now I have found this :O. I drew logbooks when I was a kid lol.

@openbioforge ... I even made an Android Fan App some years back, if anyone is interested: soth.sk/_temp/bioforge… ... thank you for making this! Are you by chance an Origin developer? Or unrelated?

@openbioforge I remember you had to press C to enter and exit combat mode, which could probably be eliminated for a modern control scheme. Alone in the Dark had a similar combat scheme with multiple attacks and was ported to many consoles. Might wanna look what they did there on 3DO.

@crazy_descent I'll take a closer look at RE schemes. No combat "mode" would do away with combat movement (different to walking and running movement), but worth trying out.

@openbioforge Cool, how abput having to hold R1 for combat mode, so you can quickly switch between running and doing fight moves..kinda like having to hold the button to aim in old resident evil games. RE might be good template for controls in general

@PolygonCrypt - Tank controls - Numpad for movement (+ Shift for run) - C to enter combat mode, then: - Alt + Numpad for hand attacks - Ctrl + Numpad for foot attacks - Space/Enter/Letters for Use/Get/Menus, etc.

@openbioforge I would actually have to go back to Bioforge and remind myself how the controls worked.
