Real rates staying negative is the only way they can gracefully default out of their debt.

Nominal number also matters from a psychological perspective but IMO the real change is expectations of inflation.

Why is everyone so hyped about treasury yields
When inflation was rate 2% and treasuries yielded zero, you were at -2% real return
Now inflation is 8% and treasury yields are 6%, giving you the same -2% real return
Only thing that changed is nominal number
