The announcement of a new data center moving into a large historic building in downtown St. Louis has been hailed as a big win by the Mayor and Greater St. Louis Inc. We couldn’t disagree more; this is not a win at all. It is an admission that leadership is failing to attract people and employers to downtown. Data centers are among the worst possible uses for an attractive historic building in an urban location. Data centers are filled with computers and switches, not people. They require massive loud air conditioning units, huge diesel-powered backup power supplies, and consume massive amounts of power. Data centers contribute nothing to the vibrancy of our downtown. The city-adopted plan for downtown, “Design Downtown”, calls for “activating the street”. A data center creates a dead zone that produces no street activity, effectively deactivating this block of downtown. College basketball is not ready for the Kellen Thames breakout season, but I really think it could happen this year. 6'7 elite athlete who can guard a 1-4, attacks the offensive boards, can handle and pass the ball well, and hit the open 3. If he puts it together, watch out A10!
