George Simion, leader of Romania’s AUR party, is accused of undermining Moldova’s pro-European government by attacking President Maia Sandu and her PAS party, aligning with pro-Russian forces ahead of Moldova’s crucial parliamentary elections on September 28, 2025. His actions, including calls to boycott Moldovan goods and participation in Kremlin-linked events, are seen as serving Russian interests, potentially destabilizing Moldova and threatening Romania’s geopolitical stance. Who does this serve besides Russia?

“They haven’t destroyed the country in 35 years,” AUR supporters retort when you criticize their Putinist party. (In reality, the country was destroyed by 45 years of communism and has been developing since 1989) Yes, it’s precisely they who have slowed Romania’s development. Because AUR is the creation of KGB-ified Securitate agents who refuse to accept that Romania is a Western democracy, a member of the EU and NATO. Instead, they want a “neutral” dictatorship (meaning out of NATO) and “sovereign” (out of the EU), effectively a vassal of Russia. That’s what their “sovereignism” translates to. AUR is the latest political expression of the old Securitate. There’s nothing new here. Georgescu and Simion are the new Vadim Tudor and Gheorghe Funar. In fact, Vadim’s daughter is now in AUR. AUR is an extension of the hardline, anti-European wing of the PSD (Ponta, Dragnea, Stănescu), which itself is an extension of the Communist Party (PCR) and the Securitate. Their politico-diplomatic model is the “sovereignism” of Ceaușescu and Malița (praised by Dungaciu and Georgescu): autarky, the illusion of autonomous games between spheres of influence, etc. Ceaușescu’s bankruptcy wasn’t enough for them; they’d like to bankrupt the country again, just to stay in power. So, of course, it’s they—the Securitate agents who have stolen, diverted, boycotted, sabotaged, infiltrated, and blackmailed everything possible—who have been harming the country not for 35 years, but for 80 years. They slandered King Michael, Rațiu, Coposu, Doina Cornea, Câmpeanu, Blandiana, Manolescu, and others in the ‘90s. They suspended Băsescu twice. They committed the crimes of the Revolution, the miners’ raids, the 2012 coup d’état, and they tried to stage another coup by rigging the 2024 elections. Fortunately, we stopped them again. Yes, we stopped them: civil society, the successors of those who, in 1990, resisted in University Square against the establishment of a “human-faced” communist regime. Since 1989, the smarter part of the Romanian people has been fighting the Securitate, which is unwittingly supported by the more backward part of the nation. That’s what it all boils down to. This time, we won. But no victory is final, so we remain vigilant. — Adrian Papahagi, Romanian philologist, essayist, and politician

Did y’all know that Ukraine is slightly smaller than Texas but they’re beating the damn Russkiys, the biggest country on earth? So pass the ammunition and Remember the Azovstal! They died for freedom!

Tensions between Russia and Azerbaijan continue to escalate. This represents a new diplomatic and geopolitical confrontation line with the Kremlin in the post-Soviet space. President of Azerbaijan made it clear to Putin that he considers Crimea and other Ukrainian territories currently held by Russian forces to be under occupation. He advised Ukraine to continue fighting for the return of these territories and for the restoration of our territorial integrity. President Aliyev urged Ukraine never to accept occupation and emphasized that this is his main piece of advice to Ukrainians in light of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war. President Aliyev also stated that Azerbaijan is preparing documentation for an international lawsuit against Russia regarding the downing of an Azerbaijani passenger plane. He stressed that Baku knows exactly what happened to their aircraft, that this incident will not be forgotten, and that Azerbaijan seeks justice. President Aliyev compared this tragedy to the downing of another passenger plane, the Malaysian MH17, by Russians. In the case of the Boeing, the investigation took more than ten years. Azerbaijan is ready to wait, but justice must prevail. Thus, we are witnessing several rather strong statements by the Azerbaijani leader directed at Russia and Putin personally - whom Aliyev knows well. These statements were made against the backdrop of a sharp conflict between Moscow and Baku, linked to the persecution of ethnic Azerbaijanis and Russian citizens of Azerbaijani origin, as well as citizens of Azerbaijan itself, by Russian security forces. It is especially important to observe how the Kremlin will respond to these statements by the President of Azerbaijan, which clearly reflect a further deterioration in Azerbaijani-Russian relations and the diminishing of Russian influence in the Caucasus. Following the return of Karabakh to Azerbaijani control, Azerbaijan has been expanding its influence both in the Caucasus and in the broader region that includes the former Soviet republics of Central Asia. Its main ally is Turkey, along with other forces interested in reducing Russian influence in the region. The Kremlin realizes that it's not just Azerbaijan trying to break free from Moscow's sphere of influence. It's Armenia is as well. Today, all of Russia's resources are tied up in its war against Ukraine. The Russians quite literally lack the means to carry out aggressive actions against other former Soviet republics. Therefore, this is a perfect time and opportunity to move out from under the Russian influence - and Ukraine's heroic struggle against the Russian empire is directly connected to creating that opportunity. One of the key points of contention is Azerbaijan's ambition to become a central hub for energy exports from Central Asia to the West - bypassing Russia. This is something Russia strongly opposes. At present, Russia is unable to manage regional affairs through its so-called "peacekeepers," as many of them are now deployed in Ukraine. As a result, Putin is likely to rely more on propaganda and will probably escalate the persecution of Azerbaijanis within Russia. Russian propagandists have already started making demands: ▪️ Halt the export of agricultural products from Azerbaijan; ▪️ Prepare for an imminent military conflict; ▪️ Strike the center of Baku with Oreshnik. However, all of this is currently just informational noise. Russia lacks meaningful economic and military leverage to influence Azerbaijan's position. Putin fully understands that escalating the conflict with Azerbaijan could also lead to a serious confrontation with Ankara and with Ilham Aliyev’s ally, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The situation will continue to evolve, and the course of the war in Ukraine will play a significant role in how it unfolds.
