@chrislhayes Can you report on the stat-level efforts in Hawaii and Montana to combat Citizens United? Could enough states enact something like this to matter in 2028?

Since this came up: 1) Axios: "You spent donor money to do the autopsy and then didn't provide" it, one [donor] told Axios. "It's not your money." 2) NBC: “He’s basically saying: ‘We learned a lot, we spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at least doing interviews in 50 states, and now we know a lot more about what went wrong and how to fix it, but we’re not going to tell the thousands and thousands of Democratic candidates around the country what we found out,” [Norman Solomon, ED of Roots Action] continued. NBC also notes that Paul Rivera, who Martin chose to lead the review, was unpaid, which Ken points out. Also: both sources in those pieces could totally be wrong. But that's where those questions came from.

AOC is right. Not enough thought is going into what will happen to the govt revenue base when AI displaces labor, as it is expected to do. A major loss of core govt services quite possible. Priority number 1 is taxing wealth in necessary and strategic ways

@treeaston In A-rated Emerson poll, it’s D+10. Special election over performance has been about D+15.

I fully expect Dems to have a very good midterm, but looking under the hood like this explains exactly why a good midterm ≠ smooth sailing for 2028. The party brand is in the toilet with the very voters who decide elections. You cannot message or pivot your way outta that.
Lakshya Jain@lxeagle17

In our new poll today, Trump approval is at -22. Two months ago, it was at -15. Meanwhile, the generic ballot has gone from D+6 to...D+6. There's a good argument to be made that Dems are hitting a bit of a ceiling here due to choices they've made. theargumentmag.com/p/why-democrat…

While there are many people celebrating the demise of LIV, for far too long there were far too many mute mouths about the cancer that LIV was and is. It tilted the game towards greed. It muddied the meritocratic aspects of golf. It’s likely that the philanthropic foundations of this game will, to some extent, be eaten into to fund the future equity of PGA Tour players. It stalled, or killed, the trajectory of hall of fame players. It divided the game. The only win, as I see it, is that LIV sought to launder the atrocities of the Saudis, but instead it further highlighted them. As LIV players sold their autonomy, the whole sport seemed to be in the throes of transition, from professionalism to authoritarianism. But the golf world knew that the Saudis were not interested in golf and that sport has norms that are worth preserving. Money, not for merit, but for the murky purposes of sportwashing crowds out those norms. It is in the striving to get better that one gets richer, that is the transformative influence of sport; both the athlete and audience benefit from the norms of competition. Sportswashing, what MBS/PIF were attempting to do with LIV by paying athletes for their celebrity to confer legitimacy on their murderous regime, reverses this process because it is only ostensibly about the competition, it is primarily about the obfuscation of the horrors of the regime. Both the athlete and the audience are robbed of the transformative influence of sport and what they are participating in and watching is merely a facade, a base amusement. So it is no surprise that almost nobody watched. Good riddance to the Saudi backed LIV.

1. The Supreme Court can pretend like it didn't strike down Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, but the result is the same. Now and in the near future, the GOP is going to be able to racially gerrymander more than a dozen Democratic districts out of existence.

Dems running for Congress and POTUS must run on Supreme Court reform. A law forcing justices into senior status after 18 years, applicable to the current bench would do the trick. That would force Roberts, Alito, and Thomas into senior status, opening three seats to be filled immediately. Biden proposed this idea, and Harris endorsed it, too. Congress would have to pass the law, though, so candidates for Congress should be pushing this as well. Here's more info: abovethelaw.com/2023/07/dont-f…

I’m not interested in complaining about this Supreme Court VRA ruling. I’m interested in action. Republicans will begin a purge of blue seats, so the purge of red seats must begin. Let’s not waste time, blue states. Just draw new maps and show the Republicans what it looks like to use their rules against them. They’ll be begging on all fours for independent redistricting.
