What opinion about Men do you have that makes people feel like this?

It feels strangely validating to watch the rest of the world get their faces ripped off for once, when historically it’s always just been us poor O&G folks. I don’t like it—I’ve been there—but I’m here to bear witness.

.@LizBerryWA is a Washington State lawmaker who worked for @GabbyGiffords and just helped pass the state's first-ever income tax on millionaires – after 25 straight hours of debate on the House floor. Gabby and I are proud of you, Liz.

The chart compares Portland with the largest cities across eight Western states. The result is hard to ignore: at income levels of $50,000, $75,000, $100,000, and $150,000, Portland residents face a higher tax burden than residents of every one of those cities—except Los Angeles. This didn’t happen by accident. Since 2009, more than 20 major tax initiatives have been piled on top of households and businesses. These include the “Pre-School for a Few” tax, the Corporate Activity Tax, the Supportive Housing Services tax, the Portland Gross Receipts Tax, and a growing list of others. Most of these taxes conveniently bypass the General Fund, instead financing new programs and bureaucracies while the city’s basic services remain chronically underfunded. Oregon has historically relied on an income tax without a sales tax, with local governments funded largely through property taxes. But many of these new levies function as stealth sales taxes—hidden from receipts but extracted from residents all the same. The result has been a spending binge at the city, county, and state levels, sidestepping limits that once restrained government growth. The cumulative effect has been predictable: investment is driven elsewhere, and population in Multnomah County is now declining. If there’s any hope of reversing this trajectory, the legislature needs to reassert its authority over the income tax and shut down the patchwork of local income taxes imposed by Multnomah County government and Metro Regional Government. And voters should start demanding something radical from municipal leaders: prioritize spending. Fund basic services first. Protect the General Fund. Stop treating taxpayers like an endless ATM.

Washington has a state income tax for the first time in history. The 9.9% rate only affects people with annual incomes above $1 million. But as high-income earners flee, taking their capital & jobs with them, the bar will be lowered soon. The 99% should leave now before it is.
