@MichaelDDS Here's the actual legal picture on Cyprus (not sarcasm or conspiracy framing) so you can be informed before replying to members of Congress: The Republic of Cyprus is the only legitimate government on the entire island recognized by the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and every single country in the world except Turkey. The self-declared “TRNC” in the north is recognized by Turkey alone and has been ruled legally invalid by United Nations Security Council Resolution 541 (1983), which states explicitly that all states must not recognize any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus. United Nations Security Council Resolution 550 and others further demand the withdrawal of Turkish occupation forces. The north has been under illegal Turkish military occupation since the 1974 invasion. Greece sent frigates and F-16s (March 2–4, 2026) at the direct request of the legitimate Republic of Cyprus government to defend the island against Iranian-backed Hezbollah drone attacks. That is a sovereign invitation from an EU state (Republic of Cyprus) to another EU state (Greece), followed by other EU states (e.g. France), and is entirely legal. Turkey’s counter-deployment of six F-16 jets and air defenses to the occupied north (March 9, 2026) is the opposite: it is reinforcement of an illegal occupation and support for an entity the entire international community (including the United States) refuses to recognize. Those F-16s are U.S.-origin aircraft. Under the Arms Export Control Act and end-use restrictions, American weapons may not be used in ways that violate international law or U.S. foreign policy. U.S. policy has never recognized the so-called “TRNC” and has long prohibited assistance that legitimizes the occupation. That is exactly why Rep. Dina Titus (and others) are calling for blocked F-35 sales and CAATSA sanctions waivers: it is enforcement of U.S. law, not some lobby plot. So no, Turkey escalates illegally and it did so while using U.S. equipment to prop up the one entity on Earth that only Turkey recognizes. Legal facts matter. Maybe read the UN resolutions and the State Department’s Cyprus policy before accusing elected officials of acting on behalf of “AIPAC and Israel.” The record is public and unambiguous.

I strongly condemn Turkey's decision to deploy F-16s to Cyprus. The move is unnecessarily antagonistic and escalatory. This is yet another reason why Turkey is an unreliable ally and why @POTUS should reject selling F-35s to Ankara or waiving CAATSA sanctions.
