@g3zay I'm staying in the hostel part, it does look done up so maybe it had closed for renovations. I booked through the Blackhouse Village itself for my stay

The Arnhem bridge sits in the background, probably the most recognised bridge of the Second World War. In the foreground, a 25-pounder field gun. Explaining to my Arnhem Battlefield Tour group today why this gun has no connection to what happened here. At nearly a ton, airborne forces never carried 25-pounders. The 1st Airborne Division used 75mm pack howitzers, light enough to fit inside a Horsa glider. This gun is a memorial piece, not a historical match.

The 1st Airborne memorial in Arnhem stands at the foot of the John Frost Bridge, set in a sunken bicycle roundabout locals call the bears pit. Each year, on the Friday of the commemorative weekend, a remembrance ceremony is held here. The memorial is a column from the destroyed Palace of Justice. It was meant to be temporary, but when a replacement was proposed, locals objected. The column remained.

Nadhim Zahawi says he doesn’t feel safe in London because yesterday at 8am, while walking from his home in a posh area, he stepped off the pavement into the road to avoid a tired-looking man who “looked as if he hadn’t slept for a week.” He assumed the man was violent. The poor guy could've been on the night shift.

@MHartleyJones Check out Dutch towns; allowing cars to dominate strangles town centres.

“Need to have a long hard think about what a town centre is for. Not shopping any more because of all the double yellow lines. If you can't park right outside the local butcher and the greengrocer you'll drive past and go to the supermarket, where you can.” thetimes.co.uk/article/945960…

Yesterday Nigel Farage again pledged to scrap the default 20mph policy in Wales if Reform in power I asked Dan Thomas (Reform's new Welsh leader) about police collision figures (Jan '25) showing c.100 fewer deaths/serious injuries on 20/30mph roads in year after limit introduced

@EdChicken2 @sommecourt @Thenappinggamer I love that idea, there’s something really special about taking it slow on two wheels, especially when you’re retracing history. It gives you time to feel the place, not just see it 😌 Was there a particular site or moment on the route that really stayed with you?

Planning a weekend in Arnhem, looking for pointers do you need a car to see everything or can you do it on public transport and taxis.?

@Thenappinggamer From the centre of Arnhem it’s easy to get a bus to Oosterbeek. In both locations you can walk to everything, it’s quite a small battlefield. I would recommend hiring a bike, though. I’ve done this a few times and it was great - cycling in the Netherlands is an absolute pleasure.

A 2D Sherman Tank memorial. On the outskirts of Arnhem you can find this excellent cut out of the famous tank. The seat sticks out so you can actually sit in it, though from personal experience I can say that it's not very comfortable. It's located in the Meinerswijk park on the south bank of the Rhine.

Some of you have asked about the terrific Ellie Henry who plays Anya in RUN AWAY on Netflix. Ellie has been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and is an ambulatory wheelchair user. Thrilled and proud to have her in this cast:

Reform Party UK Exposed 🇬🇧
Andrew Husband the Leader of Reform UK in Durham has been spinning a story about his business dealings, we have been told that he privately describes the events so: He is being held personally liable for approximately £150k of covid-related company loans. Husband seems to have not realised that company directors were personally liable as one of the terms of the loans. He is responsible for Durham Council budgets… #HusbandMustGo

Reform's council leader in Durham aims to save £1.5bn. His previous experience includes running two companies that went bust owing £1.5m, including more than £500k in tax and links to two others that went bust owing £364k. Fingers crossed he can do the same for Durham!

Other outlets should be careful before reproducing a Telegraph story about the National Trust. The paper has often had to correct and apologise for inaccurate or false claims about the organisation and we will be following up on this one.

The Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek. During Operation Market Garden, this building served as the headquarters of the 1st Airborne Division. Contrary to what is shown in A Bridge Too Far, the building suffered only relatively minor damage during the battle. After the war, the hotel reopened. In 1978, it became the Airborne Museum. Have you visited it?

@griffitha Or you could look at how mandating standards in mobile telephony enabled Europe to develop faster than the US. Surely the point is that proportionate and effective regulation can be in the interests of all, monopoly rarely so and disproportionate regulation is an impediment?

“In Utrecht, the bike is not an end in itself. It’s a means to create a liveable, healthy, climate-friendly city for all. The success can be admired in the inner city. It’s lively and yet quiet. Here, it's noticeable: Cities aren't loud; only cars are—and they play no role here.”
