Responsibility for the war in Lebanon rests with multiple actors. It is reductive to point the finger in one direction. 1. Israel never ceased its violations. Occupied land in the south. In many ways, it impeded the LAF's ability to conduct its disarmament plan. 2. The State was extremely slow and reluctant to trust its own decision (the LAF by extension as well). 3. Hezbollah refused to cooperate and actively impeded the process. Eventually, it decided to reopen the front without consulting anyone else in the country. 4. American mediation efforts were a failure and repeatedly turned a blind eye to Israel's violations while exerting enormous pressure on the Lebanese state. In the weeks that preceded the war, there was, finally, an effort to organize an international donors conference in Paris that would collect funds for the Army so it could conduct its disarmament plan. That effort collapsed when Israel and the United States began bombing Iran. I would also add, however, that the state itself, even if under immense financial and economic strain, could have diverted funds to the Army as it became a priority. It decided not to, and instead hoped that the international community would fund that effort. That choice proved catastrophic, and we are seeing the results unfold before our eyes. Make no mistake, many powerful political actors in this country preferred this outcome, hoping that Israel would finish the job. That is the nature of the Lebanese system, which invites foreign powers to settle scores domestically. That is true for both Hezbollah and its opponents.

A two-year extension of Parliament's term is undemocratic, unjustifiable, and totally unnecessary. Extremely disappointing and a terrible precedent to set for the "new" Lebanon.

The invasion and occupation of southern Lebanon is coming, the question is how deep it'll go. Israeli military analysts who convey the IDF's messages say at least 10 KMs are needed to defend the Israeli border towns/villages from anti-tank missiles.

The more I see of this U.S. and Israeli war against Iran (though less so the Lebanese dimension of it), the more it reminds me of Israel's war against Hezbollah in 2006. Ever expanding levels of destruction and violence are compensating for the absence of any credible strategy or clearly articulated goals; major victories are declared (over Iran's navy, for example), but these have no discernible impact on the (many) stated objectives of the war; sudden innovations are somehow portrayed as cases of strategic brilliance, as breakthroughs, but really only denote frustration (the Kurdish gambit); and in the absence of real progress, the bombings of buildings and infrastructures continue, but in their mindless destructiveness tend to confirm a campaign that is largely going around in circles. I may be wrong of course and am no military expert, but I have been caught up in quite a few wars, and have the same feeling today that I had in July 2006, when the Olmert government was flailing: nytimes.com/live/2026/03/0…

@levantophile That's basically impossible. Only LAF has the legitimacy and (presumed) willingness to conduct this mission.

Interesting. That said, I don’t think the LAF can do this alone. The preferable option would be for France to send a contingent of troops to assist with the disarmament, with the hope that this could evolve into a permanent military presence, akin to the British bases in Cyprus, anchoring Lebanon directly and permanently in the Western orbit rather than leaving it as a battleground. That would return Lebanon to the status it enjoyed from 1920 to 1969, the best 50-year run in this geography’s history going back centuries.

I don't believe the Israelis know what they're doing in Lebanon. I don't think they have a coherent strategy regarding Hezbollah either. Brute force will mask this for a while.

@Georges__Haddad In 2006 it was only Haret Hreik that was heavily damaged, the rest of Dahieh fared much better.

The Dahyeh Doctrine is about to be implemented. The IDF is demanding that all people in Burj al Barajneh, Hadath, Chiyah, and Haret Hreik, evacuate and head towards Mount Lebanon, and Tripoli. This is the first time Dahyeh is imposed a full evacuation order. Israel wants to inflict collective punishment to all civilians who support Hezbollah. It is not the first time they do this. Carpet bombing Dahyeh means destroying houses, schools, hospitals, pharmacies, businesses, and all kind of infrastructure such as roads and bridges. It is destroying any access to services and decent life for hundreds of thousands of civilians. Whether you support or not Hezbollah, this is a war crime. As of yesterday, the situation intensified, but if it really goes back to the 2006 war, it is about to be very tough. For the ones who remember, 2024 was a walk in the park compared to 2006 (Dahyeh got obliterated back then). To my Lebanese compatriots, check on your friends, suggest help, open your windows, if you can avoid using your car, do it (to free the roads), and hope for it to be just pyschological terror. Finally, I hope that all the people who support Israel see through this action and heavily put pressure on the Israeli leaders to stop this madness. Making the civilians suffer will not make them oppose Hezbollah, it will send them directly into their arms.

@Georges__Haddad Curiously, this is growing at a much slower pace compared to the last war. I recall that the number of displaced people reached 1 million within a week.

On the number of displaced: A little reminder that the number 58 000 was shared 2 days ago, and there were already between 56 000 and 60 000 who were still displaced from the last war (so 120 000 overall as of Monday). Add the numbers of today, around 150 000, and we're looking at 270 000 at least (that's without taking into account the people who found a house and are able to pay rent since 2024). More will come.
