Three weeks has passed since the death of Ali Khamenei. The regime has not been able to hold a funeral for him. Don’t for a second believe the “experts” who keep pushing the idea that the regime is not weakened.

نوروز ۲۵۸۵، نوروز رهایی؛ هنگامه پایان اهریمن هم‌میهنان، بهاری دیگر در آستانه میهن ایستاده است؛ بهاری که این‌بار با عطر شکوفه‌های لاله درآمیخته است؛ لاله‌هایی که نشان از خون بهترین فرزندان ایران دارند، آنانی که در ۱۸ و ۱۹ دی و در جریان انقلاب ملی شیر و خورشید، جان خویش را در راه آزادی این سرزمین نثار کردند. سوگ آن عزیزان، داغی است بر دل هر ایرانی آزاده؛ اما این سوگواری، ما را خموده و خاموش نکرده است، بلکه آتشی در جان‌ها افروخته که اراده ملی را استوارتر از همیشه به پیش می‌راند. اینک، در هنگامه‌ای که فرمانروایی اهریمن‌خویان به لرزه افتاده، تاریخ کهن این سرزمین بار دیگر پیش چشم ما جان می‌گیرد؛ گویی داستان فریدون و ضحاک، این‌بار نه در افسانه، که در متن روزگار ما تکرار می‌شود. ضحاکِ زمانه، که سالیان دراز با خون جوانان این سرزمین تخت خود را نگاه داشته بود، فرو افتاده است؛ و از دل این خشم و امیدِ برآمده از یک ملت، فریدونی دیگر سر برآورده که بازگشتش به میهن، نوید پایان این شب دیرپای است. آنان که در دی‌ماه جان باختند، کاوه‌های این روزگار بودند که درفش برافراشتند و فریاد زدند که این شب سیاه، پایانی خواهد داشت. امروز، پژواک آن فریادها در سراسر ایران پیچیده و زنجیره هراس از هم گسسته است. پیکر فرسوده ستم، زیر ضربات پی‌درپی، هر روز فروتر می‌رود و سپیده آزادی از افق نمایان‌تر می‌شود. نوروز، این پایندان جاودانه کیستی ایرانی، بار دیگر پیام خود را با صلابت به گوش تاریخ می‌رساند: هیچ زمستانی پایدار نیست، و هیچ شب تیره‌ای جاودان نمی‌ماند. بهار، خواه‌ناخواه، از راه می‌رسد؛ و این‌بار، بهار آزادی ایران در راه است. در آستانه این سال نو، با دل‌هایی که همزمان سوگوار و استوارند، پیمان می‌بندیم که راه آن جان‌باختگان را تا فرجام ادامه دهیم؛ تا آفتاب آزادی از ارس تا هیرمند بتابد، تا باران رهایی، پلشتی اهریمن را از چهره ایران بشوید، و تا مرغ سحر، نغمه بیداری و آبادی این سرزمین کهن را سر دهد. امروز، بیش از هر زمان دیگر، به یقین رسیده‌ایم که سال ۲۵۸۵ ایرانی، سال آزادی ایران خواهد بود؛ نه یک آرزو، که حقیقتی در حال تکوین. جبهه هفت آبان فرارسیدن نوروز ۲۵۸۵ را به همه هم‌میهنان و باشندگان حوزه تمدنی ایران شادباش می‌گوید و این بهار را سرآغاز رهایی و شکوه دوباره ایران‌زمین می‌داند.

I know some may be confused about the footages they see of Iranians cheering and dancing on the streets while their country is at war. (Reminder: the main enemy of the Iranians is the ruling Islamic regime.) Today marks Chaharshanbeh Soori (the Festival of Light and Fire) a festival held on the eve of the last Wednesday of the Persian year when Iranians celebrate and dance around the fire. This is the one day of the year that the regime has always been helpless in controlling the crowd. Growing up in Iran I always viewed this occasion as the day of the year that Iranians show their power. A yearly reminder for the regime that the ideology they push for is defeated.

@NickKristof @vali_nasr Not sure if it’s harder to end but it sure is harder to fight for the regime. Also Larijani is believed to have led the massacre of protesters in January. So with him and many Basij and IRGC top officials gone regime is also having a harder time fighting its own people.

I fear @vali_nasr is right. When I met Ali Larijani I found him an absolute insider kingpin of the Iranian regime -- but also the kind of strong and pragmatic leader who just might be able to hammer out a peace deal. Not sure, but I wonder if the war will now be harder to end.

Hardliners being stronger doesn’t mean regime stronger (or more unified). It only indicates that the prospects of diplomacy are quite dim. Undoubtedly the regime is weaker after losing so many top officials, arms/drones/missiles depots, IRGC bases and the heavy bombardment of the repression arms. While many officials are replaceable, the ever tightening inner circle is not quite expandable.

If Larijani gone, “Tehran loses one more of the few men who could still link the battlefield to politics,” @AliVaez told me. “And that makes the regime not weaker in a simple sense, but blinder, stiffer, and more dangerous.”

This type of reaction is based on a narrative pushed by the pro engagement lobby that has misled the US policy under several past administrations including Obama. I argue that regime’s shrinking leadership circle and the power shift towards hardliners also shrinks the base of the regime. In fact this will further accelerate the fragmentation process within the regime base. Definitely not having a unifying effect and “rallying around the flag” idea that some keep bringing up.

آرزوی شما دیدن کشته شدن خامنه‌ای و لاریجانی بود؟ آرزوی من زمانی بود که خامنه‌ای و لاریجانی پس از دادرسی منصفانه در زندان باشند. و می‌دانید دیگر آرزویم چه بود؟ این‌که اگر کسی در زندان یک سیلی بهشان زده باشد خودش توبیخ می‌شد. آرزوی دموکراسی و حکومت قانون.

Larijani was the political mastermind of the regime post Ali Khamenei. True that he’s replaceable but the inner circle is pretty tight right now and not many left for the regime with similar levels of track record and name recognition, trustworthiness, and more importantly clout among different factions of the regime (reformist, centrist, conservative) as well as different segments within the IRGC. Bottom line is the glue that keeps the different parts of the regime is fading away fast.

Larijani's killing won't have a decisive effect on the Iranian regime's cohesion and functioning. BUT if Israel and US keep this going, if they kill twenty or thirty more Larijanis, the regime COULD experience some sort of collapse. But there won't be any easy transition. The winner will be likely someone from inside the regime, such as Qalibaf (if he wasn't hit already), who will institute a new authoritarian state which will play ball with the US and Israel.
