@theslowtell Probably both, but the effect is the same either way.

@LauraLunaTech exactly. “capacity” keeps it clean. “territory” makes you think about neighbours, water, heat, local politics. do you think the industry uses abstract language because it is technically accurate, or because it keeps the uncomfortable parts out of view?

Everyone talks about putting AI data centers in space. But the more rational answer may be the ocean. Panthalassa just closed a $140M Series B led by the legendary Peter Thiel to build wave-powered floating data centers satellite-connected, grid-independent, naturally cooled, and built to scale to 100GW. The ocean covers 71% of Earth. We've barely touched it. And it doesn't have the grid bottlenecks already choking AI expansion. Where do you think AI compute actually comes from in the future: space, ocean, or something nobody's talking about yet?
Garth Sheldon-Coulson@garthsc

Today we're announcing @_panthalassa’s $140M Series B, led by Peter Thiel, with participation from John Doerr and many other incredible investors. The mission: unlock the ocean as another planetary-scale energy resource for humanity. First stop: compute.

@kunal_twts Yes the effects for human and animals living in proximity to these centers should be really taken into consideration!

@LauraLunaTech Let’s hope so they get it done with no potential hazards to see animals (heat might damage them too)

@theslowtell that under discussion is probably deliberate. As long as we frame it as a capacity problem, it is a purely technical problem. The moment we reframe it as a territory problem, it suddenly becomes a political and societal problem about ensuring fairness.

@LauraLunaTech yes, exactly. we talk about compute like it is just capacity. but once it needs water, power, cooling and territory, it becomes a question of who gets the upside and who lives next to the machinery. that part feels under-discussed to me.

In the future, we will not only need labels like… Made in Germany, Made in India, Made in Korea, but also some kind of label or verification like… Made by a human.

@AnkanXplorer Exactly, the question is not whether we get this energy but where we get it from.

@LauraLunaTech AI’s future may depend more on energy and cooling than model architecture itself. The ocean could quietly become the backbone of the next AI era.

@theslowtell Really strong thought! The location of compute is a moral question as much as an economic one.

@LauraLunaTech maybe the real question is not space or ocean. it is what happens when intelligence becomes another industry looking for cheap land, cheap power, and somewhere to put the heat.

@thenigeljacob Some people take ownership of a subreddit and want to expand it. They can curate content and promote it in different ways, for example by crossposting or increasing post quantity and quality through moderation or events etc. ( tbh I have never done this for a subreddit)

Legitimate point on ROI. But the land cost argument goes beyond price per acre. Getting permits for a major data center now takes years. Communities are increasingly hostile: in Memphis, xAI built Colossus, ended up operating illegal gas turbines for nearly a year, faced NAACP lawsuits, and almost all politicians involved in bringing it to Memphis have now been voted out of office! Maine just passed a statewide moratorium on new data centers. Land to build data centers becomes increasingly scarce and therefore expensive. Oftentimes now it is only in exchange for other massive investments and not being able to tap into local resources.

@LauraLunaTech I am not sure I understand how would they save on land costs, grid infrastructure. Still have to build more complex infrastructure than in land. Free cooling - how so? They can build center near lake I guess. I am not invested in this topic, just genuinely curious.

I was thinking about this as well. In my opinion, their current Series B is more of a proof of concept. Long-term and at scale, they can save on land costs, grid infrastructure, and free cooling from the ocean, which saves roughly a third of most data centers' OPEX, and the wave energy is effectively free.

Started this account less than 1 week ago with 0 followers. Today I crossed 600+ followers, made a lot of friends here, and connected with so many smart builders, devs, and indie hackers ☺️ A lot of people asked what helped me grow, so here’s my answer: • I mostly focused on connecting with other small to mid-sized accounts in my niche and left thoughtful replies on posts or projects I genuinely found interesting. Those interactions naturally led to mutual support. • I tried to be genuine and supportive, spending time reviewing others’ projects (if asked) or answering questions. This helped me make friends and stay motivated. • For posting: quality > quantity. I only shared things that genuinely interested or surprised me. • My two posts about my own progress performed incredibly well, so don’t be afraid to share your journey publicly. • Always reply to early comments (or all if possible) on your posts. It boosts reach and sparks better conversations. Like wise don’t be shy to ask questions on other people’s posts, they will appreciate it! • Lastly, you don’t need to spend your entire day on X even if it sometimes feels like it :) I work full-time and mostly used my commute, waiting times, or while cooking (2-3 hours a day on average). Consistency and good posts matter more! And honestly… probably a bit of algorithm luck too 😄 Most importantly: make friends, support others, and have fun here 🤝 What has helped you grow or meet great people on X so far?
