Why is Ethiopia still developing? Not because it escaped colonization. Countries rise or fall based on leadership, institutions, stability, investment, education, and how much freedom they have to use their own potential. For centuries, Ethiopia faced invasions, internal conflicts, droughts, famine, foreign interference, and regional instability. Yet despite all that, it preserved its sovereignty when most of Africa was carved up by colonial powers. Vietnam’s success doesn’t prove colonialism was beneficial. It proves that countries can recover and grow when they build effective institutions and focus on development. The real question isn’t whether colonialism happened. It’s whether a nation was allowed to fully unleash its potential. Ethiopia has spent much of its modern history fighting to protect its independence rather than being allowed to develop in peace. Keeping a lion in a cage for generations doesn’t prove the lion is weak. It only shows how much strength was restrained.

Ethiopia was never colonized. For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent. Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity. If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true. Can we please retire this excuse?

It’s always interesting hearing lectures about democracy from supporters of a government that hasn’t held a national election in over three decades. Ethiopia has problems, but it also has institutions, elections, universities, businesses, and public debate. Before blaming Ethiopia for every problem in the region, perhaps explain why Eritreans are still waiting for the most basic political rights in their own country.

In fact it is worse than that, Not only was it not colonised, over the decades, it has received 10Os of Billions from global powers, yet because of the myopic and expansionist #Ethiopian leaders, it has dragged all its neighbours into war and under development, and the current leader (Abiy Ahmed) is the worst example; he has declared war on its own people.

I strongly condemn the attacks against innocent worshippers and the violence that affected members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Arsi. Such acts are unacceptable and must be investigated thoroughly by the appropriate authorities. Those who planned, supported, or carried out violence against civilians should be identified and held accountable under the law, regardless of their political affiliation or position. The victims and their families deserve justice, and the truth should be established through a transparent and independent investigation. Violence against religious communities and innocent civilians has no place in Ethiopia. All political leaders, organizations, and armed groups should reject hatred, condemn attacks on civilians, and support peaceful solutions to political disagreements.

Addis Standard never seems interested in balance. Instead of reporting both challenges and progress, they make it sound like Ethiopia is in a permanent state of crisis and desperation. Every issue is amplified while developments, improvements, and government efforts receive little or no attention. When a media outlet focuses almost exclusively on negative narratives, people begin to question whether it is reporting objectively or simply pushing a particular agenda. Ethiopia has real challenges, but it is also changing, building, and developing. Honest journalism should present the full picture, not just the parts that fit a predetermined story. Addis Standard continues to turn every issue into a dramatic headline. Challenges exist, but constantly exaggerating problems without proper context is not journalism it's narrative building. Ethiopia faces difficulties like many countries, yet the coverage rarely reflects progress, recovery efforts, or the full picture. Balanced reporting means presenting both challenges and achievements, not just the negative side.
