My husband earns ₦950k monthly as his basic salary, excluding bonuses. He gives me ₦300k every month for feeding the family. We have two children whose combined school fees are ₦140k per term. I'm a housewife because my husband asked me to stop working and focus on raising the children. He said they needed their mother at this early stage. Recently, my brother in Germany sent me ₦1 million as a birthday gift. I told my husband about it, and he asked what I planned to do with the money. I told him I didn't have any concrete plans yet, but I was thinking of putting about 80% of it in a fixed deposit and using the rest to buy new clothes for the kids. He then suggested that I use the money to pay our next year's rent and also pay two terms of the children's school fees in advance. According to him, that would take some financial pressure off him, and that I didn’t need to keep money aside for emergencies because he would handle any emergency that came up. Our annual rent for our one-bedroom apartment is ₦650k. When I did the calculations, I realized I would have little or nothing left after paying the rent and school fees, so I refused. That decision led to a huge argument. He said I wasn't being a supportive wife and is now threatening to leave the house and stay away until I do what he asked. Am I wrong for refusing? He doesn't give me any personal allowance apart from the feeding money, and now that I finally have money of my own, he wants me to spend it on responsibilities he already takes care of. Two years ago, I saw a heavily pregnant woman in the hospital. Her baby was in a breech position so they advised her to go for a caesarean section but she refused. Her husband who was abroad has already given a go ahead for CS but this woman kept screaming that CS was not her portion. As I waited patiently for my result, she came again and asked them to do another scan. They did and the baby didn't change position. She was in pain o. Thank God for the delay in getting my result, I did amebo well that day. Just as we were all there, the most interesting thing happened. I nearly laughed, to be very honest. The pregnant lady's sister said to her, "Nk, there are 7 of us. If anything happens to you, we can only cry and count minus one. Highest, 1 year, your husband will remarry. We have been on this matter since last night. I don't know what else you want me to do for you". Just then, the oversabi radiographer brought my result and I had to leave so I don't look like the amebo I wanted to do complete. All the same, I hope she listened to that advice and I hope it ended well. I have a friend who is almost 30 and works in a very good company on the island. Every weekday, she leaves home as early as 4am just to beat traffic and get to work on time, and she doesn’t get back home until around 10–11pm at night. Her salary is really good, like really good… but here’s the part that’s hard to understand. Her parents have refused to let her move out and rent an apartment closer to her workplace. Their reason is that they don’t want their daughter living alone. They say her future husband is supposed to meet her in their house, not in her own apartment. But here’s what makes it even more confusing… her brothers who she is older than were allowed to move out and rent their own places. When she first got the job, her parents were even the ones receiving her salary.
