This isn't new. It's been this way for half a century or more. My father raised me well - he told me that as soon as possible in my young adult life, I should put away 6 months worth of living expenses. So I did. By age 25 I had 6 months of living expenses saved where I wouldn't mess with it, and as my living expenses grew, so did the amount I have in savings. Now, I have over 2 years of living expenses saved which will convert to retirement income once I reach retirement age. Meanwhile the kids today pay $1,100 every other year for the newest iPhone, DoorDash several meals a week, take themselves on extravagent vacations, and buy brand new cars instead of paying cash for a reliable used car. And they have no savings. This isn't because of the current economic climate - it's a cultural issue and a parenting issue.
