I wanted to make an episode about training a neural network (complete with transformers, no less) on my PDP-11/44. From 1979. The code I started with is MACRO-11 assembly, but requires the MACRO11 cross-assembler, which runs on Windows. I didn't want Windows involved in this retro project, so spent the rest of the day back-porting the Windows assembler, written in C, to 211BSD UNIX. That meant a few big changes - pre-ANSI C for one. No inline declarations, all of that. And I had to split my code/data to expand the usable RAM to 128K. In the end, though, I got it running! It assembles, builds, makes a paper tape image, loads the code, runs it, trains the model, and learns!

My Dad died some 30 years ago. I still have his wallet and watch in a drawer. I'm fifth generation family hardware store, and my grandfather gave my father this watch in about 1960, I would guess. It's a full automatic (self-winding) movement by Hyde. I've heard of Hyde Park, but never just "Hyde". It's got an Incabloc, 21 jewels, but that's all I know. If anyone's ever heard of one of these, or knows anything about the brand, let me know. Even Grok was stumped. After 30-some years in a hardware store, it's pretty rough, but I'd never restore it... wouldn't be "his" anymore.

I take Waymo and just marvel at how much better it is the Tesla FSD. I wish my Tesla drove like a waymo but it doesn’t. No question we’ve hit a wall. What will it take for it to actually move from level 2 to 3-4? I want it to work but I think Tesla has to rethink the approach. $TSLA

If the United States truly thinks about withdrawing from NATO, then European security will be based solely on the European Union. But not in its current form. I think that the EU is in a situation where it needs more countries. The UK, Ukraine, Türkiye, and Norway. These are four strong countries, which are part of Europe. Together, the UK, Ukraine, and Türkiye have armies that are stronger than Russia's army. Without Ukraine and Türkiye, Europe can’t match Russia. With the four countries on board you can wrest control of the seas, have secure skies and the largest land forces. It’s not about offense, because when Russia makes the decision to have an army of 2.5 million people by 2030, Europe has to think about security and how to preserve its independence. The UK once was a member of the EU. There are concerns about agriculture when it comes to Türkiye. But you can manage all of this if you have a really great economy.
