John Tory takes his grandkids out for breakfast. If you're up with kids at 6am in Toronto and need pancakes by 7, your options are Cora or Stacked Pancake. And it's a good time. The real joke might be that you can't get there by subway until 8am on Sundays.

First off, insane no one asked me. But second: in a city as diverse and dynamic as Toronto, it absolutely tracks that John Tory’s favourite place is basically Denny’s

@ShopifyDevs @EasyRoutesApp This application could be excellent for developed countries with clear information such as postcodes. Companies with less developed postcode or simple address systems must use systems that combine multiple map systems, such as Geowix. geowix.com/In #trafficistanbul

Not enough can be said about my friends and incredible entrepreneurs @avarma and @sundeep, twin giants of tech across Canada and the US, but I’ll try. I first met them in 2009 while building Buzzd in NYC, while they were pioneering mobile apps at Xtreme Labs. Since then, their journey has been nothing short of remarkable, including: Xtreme Labs → acquired by Pivotal Labs Autonomic → acquired by Ford in just 11 months (<$400M) Definitive → acquired by @GroqInc (recently valued at $6.9B) @withmantle → an AI-native Carta disruptor, raised $10M But beyond the exits and headlines, their greatest legacy is the families they’ve built and the countless people they’ve lifted along the way. Last night we celebrated Amar’s 50th. In a room of 100+, every single person had a story of how Amar and Sunny had changed their lives—as teammates, founders, investors, or simply as friends. I’ve never been in a room quite like that, and I felt truly lucky to be there. Happy birthday, Amar—and thank you both for building not just epic companies, but epic communities that continue to raise all of us. 🚀

Line 1 fully closed up now (st Clair to the other side) just during late morning rush. Two thoughts: First, I want a better warning or refund mechanism to hold the TTC accountable to this! Why do I find out about this terrible level of service after I pay!? Secondly, I’m seeing a lot more service degradation during August. Im speculating here and I’m all for vacations but essential service has got to continue. Have we become so life-over-work here in Toronto that it negatively impacts the lives of others!!?

I was lucky to get to take the hard path and look stupid at Xtreme Labs with @fnthawar early in my career - that has made all the difference!

.@Shopify was founded over 20 years ago, has over 10,000 employees, is fully remote, yet continues to operate with intensity, urgency, and a first-principled way of thinking. A lot of this is due to their Head of Engineering, Farhan Thawar (@fnthawar). In our conversation, Farhan shares: 🔸 How he fosters intensity within his org (without burnout) 🔸 Why pair programming is far too underutilized 🔸 Why choosing the harder path leads to better outcomes 🔸 How he hires without interviewing 🔸 His mission to create a “crafter’s paradise” for engineers 🔸 How he built one of the world’s largest internship programs 🔸 Much more Listen now 👇 • YouTube: youtu.be/C_lhMOjG7PE • Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/6zhy7Z… • Apple: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how… Thank you to our wonderful sponsors for supporting the podcast: 🏆 @DeveloperXM — A platform for measuring and improving developer productivity: getdx.com/lenny 🏆 @withpersona — A global leader in digital identity verification: withpersona.com/lenny 🏆 @TrustVanta — Automate compliance. Southern Ontario (Toronto/Ottawa/Waterloo) is the biggest sleeper corridor in the History of Computation. Pioneered: first internet search engine (OpenText), compilers (Watcom), Elliptic Curve Cryptography (Certicom), GPUs (ATI), smart phones (RIM/Blackberry), Optical Networking (Nortel) and modern deep learning (UofT Hinton Lab). Punches way above it's weight on R&D. Needs more respect.

Built for Shopify all started with an idea that if we made it easier for merchants to discover great apps and gave developers the tools and guidance they needed to build them, we could create a virtuous cycle that helps everyone grow. And that’s exactly what’s happening. Since we officially launched the program at our Summer ‘23 Edition, Built for Shopify apps have seen a 50%+ increase in daily installs on average, with some seeing nearly 300% growth. Here’s why this works👇

@pt @paulg Talent ID is a trait in great coaches. Usually more about development, profiles to pick the right team. GM roles are about pipeline, dealmaking, and bringing in talent long term. There’s overlap. In strong cultures you can trust specialization. See soccer: theguardian.com/news/2017/dec/…

@paulg Don’t sports teams generally separate coaching and hiring? Isn’t the General Manager in charge if personnel and the coach in charge of the games? We need a sports person here.

Had a fascinating conversation with someone who'd worked in admissions at several elite universities. The way things work is basically as if you had a company where HR was responsible for all the hiring decisions.
