The Catechism. Thanks to the reformers, Bibles were placed directly into the hands of ordinary people, after Rome had essentially kept it under lock and key. The Council of Trent, between 1545–1563 was their deliberate counterstrike. When the Bible started exposing false teachings and errors, Rome made an aggressive move to protect its power, doctrines and control of the minds of the people. Right on the heels of Trent, in 1566, came the Catechism. The Catechism was strategically written to drive Papal Rome’s teachings deep into the minds of Catholics. The Catechism served as a spiritual weapon to keep the people tethered to the Church's teachings, as Bible-centered challenges arose. That’s the real story. The Catechism didn’t show up in a neutral, peaceful setting. It was written in the heat of a fierce battle over truth and ultimate authority. The Reformers said: “Let the people hear God’s Word for themselves.” Papal Rome’s answer was: “No, listen to us instead.”
