@FUTOCHIMPO Slicing a bunch of bacon I cured and smoked for an event at our church last week--and the finished product.

@FUTOCHIMPO Likely though, what these soldiers thought was 'bacon,' was simply uncured pork belly at the Yakiniku restaurant--which is still delicious, but definitely not what they would be expecting if they were hoping to get bacon.

There is a pragmatic streak in Evangelicalism that absolutely and inevitably leeds to a kind of gnostic pietism that simultaniously is hyper-ascetic (particularly towards young men) and hyper-antinomian. Been meaning to pick up a thread about how the cult, 'The Family,' used sex as an evangelism method (calling it flirty fishing), because their cult leader's twisted logic that getting a person into heaven using sex was the lesser of two evils, and God would ultimately be glad that someone was saved (and it allowed him to have sex with his members).

Many saw Trevor Sheatz sharing his wife's testimony as a beautiful story. Others saw it as treading out the sins of one’s past for social media clout. The “She’s more pure than most virgins” line is clearly a dig at other people, as this discussion was framed in the context of the "haughty virgin vs reformed whore" debate. And this brings us to the topic of testimonies. In the church, we have an obsession with dramatic conversion stories, and the more salacious the sin, the more elevated a person can become in celebrity Christendom. Repenting after sleeping with your boyfriend. Boring! Claiming Christ after being one of the few wildly successful OnlyFans prostitutes. Book her at TPUSA! (These stories aren't even good testimonies. "Look, I had lots of sex and made lots of money. Now I'm saved" has a vibe that encourages prodigality.) And so we’ve seen a number of lofty conversion stories of complete frauds, like Kanye West, Russell Brand, and even Robert Blaire White. Sheatz is elevating his wife’s sin as making her more qualified as a believer, as though the count of our forgiven sins is a competition and something to virtue signal about. The virgin need not apply for he or she cannot grasp forgiveness nearly as much. This is prideful. Suffice to say that dramatic conversion stories are overrated, and boring conversion stories are underrated, as the glory in them goes to God’s faithfulness over generations.

@hotkurger @KomugikoST I can think of at least three places in the last week. A rest stop on the highway, a gas station toilet, and a restroom at a local park ... Then again, I live in rural Japan, so your mileage may vary. But I had similar experiences regularly during my six years living in Chiba.

A few of the things she says aren't necessarily wrong. Frequently public bathrooms in Japan lack soap--meaning most people, if they do wash their hands after going to the restroom are just rinsing them. Blowing your nose in public is considered rude, meaning that people would rather sniffle for hours on the train rather than blowing their nose once. Also, coughing without covering your mouth historically hasn't been seen as rude or gross. By Western standards, Japanese actually have a lower bar for hygiene when it comes to coughing and sneezing than many people in the West. Although my wife is a bit of a germaphobe and literally brings wet-wipes to the grocery store to wipe down the cart before using it. She doesn't like handling money, as its 'dirty,' and frequently complains about the state of the public bathrooms. She will often change our daughter's diapers in our car or in her stroller rather than using the changing table in a public restroom. With a population of a 100 million, you're going to run into a lot of people with different hygiene standards here the longer you're in Japan. Also, I was in Japan during COVID, and the mask protocol was pretty bad--some people wearing the same mask every day for months (even with blotches of lipstick and snot stuck to it). Worst B.O. experiences in Japan are a toss up between homeless, clearly mentally ill Japanese men, and some S Asian migrant laborers.

@NESNAugust @AdLucem7 No, no we wouldn't. But as an ex-Catholic, I can tell you that the apostacy in the Roman church is much faster than within Evangelical Protestantism.

@__Conall The apostle Paul wouldn't talk with boldness about his heavenly vision; and spoke with genuine anguish and pain over his past sin and ignorance. I think we should take a page out of that book.

Honestly, we need Pastors telling us there’s grace and hope despite sin and its effects right now. We should be ashamed of past sin. Christ took that shame with Him to the cross along with our sin though. I’m disgusted by the attitude that says it’s game over. No, it’s time to sin no more and see how God uses a trophy of grace.
