The plan was to move migrant families to a vacant prison in the small town of Norfolk, Mass., population 11,000. Then came anger, fear, and a fight over the meaning of shelter. wapo.st/3B5zO23

@rubycramer looks like all the Trump fear ads and the Fox News loops did their job stoking the locals

@rubycramer What an article! Norfolk should have followed the generous example of those summering at Martha's Vineyard. Out of the kindness of their hearts (and wallets) they gave each migrant a sandwich and put them on the next bus. Why can't MAGA people do the same?

@rubycramer Ruby, incredibly well written from an unbiased observer viewpoint. It’s a shame we don’t have more journalists like you.

@rubycramer This is a really wonderful story, and very well-written. To talk about what it means for a town to take in migrants, refugees; challenges to social norms, language, schools, everything. Suddenly the backlash and loss of well-wishing! So glad you found Kevin, trying to be fair.

@rubycramer Ruby, This is an excellent article. I was riveted until the end. Prejudice occurs when folks aren't well educated. The Haitian people are a very intelligent and proud population. I cared for their kids as an RN at Children's Hosp. It appears that no one bothered to understand.

Stop electing foolish people
@rubycramer You did a great job with this article. Thank you. What strikes me is that the building used to house actual criminals, and now some townspeople are afraid of refugee families.

@rubycramer You've done a decent job representing both sides of this social situation for a small American town. Can't help but wonder why comments are recorded on a social media platform with no business representing American values. It represents only a selfish profit motive of owners.

@rubycramer What is the average IQ in this town of Norfolk? I'm willing to bet that whatever it was, it went up by several digits the day these so-called "beggars" stepped off the bus and walked into that shelter.

@rubycramer Excellent reporting on a very moving story. I appreciate how you remained empathetic to all the people involved. As I listened I kept asking myself how I would feel and what I would do if a similar situation arose in my little town of 17,000.

@rubycramer I never expected to read this about Norfolk, Mass. I was quite astounded. Now I begin to see why some vote for Trump. It shows years of misinformation and lies to get us here. They should have a "mixer and let locals meet these families and learn about their lives. Can they?

@rubycramer @HenryJGomez Liberal editorializing disguised as journalism. “as the newest member of the Norfolk select board, composed of three elected officials who set the policies for the town, his job at that night’s town meeting was to remain neutral and open” BS! His “job” is to represent residents

@rubycramer A moving and well written account of this town's intolerance (not everyone) toward a just and compassionate effort to aid our global sisters and brothers in need. Thank you for documenting this.
