Executive Chairman of MicroStrategy, @saylor, on Ordinals: "If I wanted to burn something, make it immutable, indestructible, immortal forever for hundreds of years, then Bitcoin would be the go to place to do it and I think Ordinals are an example of an application to do that."

Recursion! Why should I use it? Let's use the Fomojis 2.0 as an example to see the power of recursion! Fomojis 2.0 is 2009 supply. Before recursion it would’ve cost us 4.85 BTC to inscribe. With recursion it only cost 0.19 BTC Saving 4.66 BTC ~ $140,000 USD How? Magic 👇 Here’s the comparison of regular images vs HTML using recursion at a fee rate of 21 sats/vB which is what we inscribed at back in June 1024 x 1024 px WEBP images - 4.85BTC! HTML at same quality with recursion - 0.19BTC! These HTML inscriptions render basically the same as regular images and can be right click saved just like any image To get the files down to this cost without recursion would make them crazy blurry! Using recursion it was 96% cheaper and more efficient! This is why we built @generatord_ ! After inscribing Fomojis 2.0 we had heaps of people asking for help with recursion, so instead of helping them 1 by 1 we built a tool so anyone can do it for themselves. Why use GeneratOrd? The alternative to recursion is to inscribe each item in your collection as a separate image. Because images are large compared to HTML files, it's way more expensive. Without GeneratOrd: Fomojis 2.0 has 2009 images, and each is roughly 46KB. This results in a total size of the whole collection of 92.4MB. At a fee rate of 21 sats/vB, the total cost of inscribing all 2009 images would be around 4.85BTC! For most collections, this would be way too expensive. With GeneratOrd: Fomojis 2.0 has 170 different traits, each one is roughly 19KB. The total size of the traits is 3.23MB. The HTML files are 117 bytes each, and there are 2009 of them, resulting in an extra 235KB to inscribe. Finally, the metadata was 26KB, resulting in the total size of the collection being 3.5MB. At a fee rate of 21 sats/vB, this would only cost 0.19BTC! That is a saving of over 96% A saving of 4.66 BTC ~ $140,000 USD Note: These costs are purely the inscription fees, including padding its another 0.2 BTC in both cases because we use 10k padding (we’re old school) This is just 1 example… 21 sats/vb is high today, but in May that was low! The higher the fees and bigger the collection, the greater the benefit of using recursion will become Luckily fees at the moment are manageable, but next bull market recursion will be almost a must! If you’re keen to learn more or want to give it a go feel free to reach out 🫡 The other biggest barrier to Ordinals is the complexity so we’ve tried to make it super intuitive no matter what technical knowledge you have. And stay tuned for some fun examples and demos coming up soon 🧙
