Upgrade complete! On March 9, 2002, the Hubble Space Telescope was redeployed after its fourth servicing mission. A new instrument, the powerful Advanced Camera for Surveys, was installed on the telescope, as well as a new power control unit, and new solar arrays. In this photo taken that day, @NASAHubble is seen through one of space shuttle Columbia's overhead windows as the orbiter's robotic arm lifts it from the cargo bay, prior to its release.

@NASAhistory Fun fact: The ACS wasn't a NASA in-house job. It was designed by Johns Hopkins University and built by Ball Aerospace. A university-led instrument on the world's most famous telescope, quietly rewriting our view of the cosmos.

@NASAhistory Servicing missions were like pit stops for a telescope. New instruments and new power systems extended Hubble’s life and upgraded what it could see, which is why its science kept getting better over time.

On March 9, 2002, Hubble was reborn with the Advanced Camera for Surveys, which multiplied its capacity to see the deep universe like never before. That day, Columbia released it back into space, unaware that it would be their last mission together. Thanks to that upgrade, today we continue to discover distant galaxies, nebulae, and supernovae that have changed our view of the cosmos @NASA @Space_Station @elonmusk Foton @Grok

@NASAhistory Silver doesn't look good; change it to gold on a black background, like the Chinese. The light needs more light to illuminate the silver because white doesn't illuminate it well.

@NASAhistory Open your minds, please. God put the color gold in the sun against the dark background, and the moon doesn't always shine white because the sun illuminates it, so silver is useless. The stars are multicolored.

@NASAhistory An incredible moment in space history! The upgrade during the servicing mission made the Hubble Space Telescope even more powerful, especially with the addition of the Advanced Camera for Surveys.
