i spoke with a 68yo retiree in Japan he retired from a big financial corpo, wife never worked he said the following there's one thing that a slave covets the most and thats the prospect of freedom the foreigner knows Japan is an adults' disneyland for 90% of the people for the remaining 10% its the last or close to last bastion of culture, civility, traditional values (once you go outside of the kanto area at least) as kind as they are on the outside, they dont let ppl into their minds much if you dont know the language well and they're super tired of the past 5 years of fetishization the west has put them through, esp through the internet between the onslaughts of tourists and the many chinese, vietnamese, nepalese et al, and ofc the current admin that is hot and cold on some quite hit issues - they are ducking tired of it all the 50-60+ yos who have been through the absolute best and the absolute worst (80s and 90s) period are super bearish on the future in many aspects the old man told me his sons are having a horrible time wrt compensation, overtime, and one of them just wishes he can be a streamer and duck off somewhere to Europe just so he isnt in Japan anymore - they feel its worse than it actually is he KNOWS they have a way worse QOL/COL ratio and it hurts him that despite doing his best and them doing their best as well, life keeps getting worse there's one thing that a slave covets the most and thats the prospect of freedom for younger ppl enslaved across the world, this rings doubly true, if not triply in a post AI world
