@mattyglesias You willing to back Trump to take them down? Or would you prefer to be defeated while telling yourself you're totally righteous?

@RJPilkenton @mattyglesias @ddayen wait, you think lina khan wanted to work for binance but just couldn't bc she didn't play her cards right? this is like the most nihilistic take on the whole internet

@mattyglesias Or @ddayen, perhaps Ms. Khan couldn't get any big payoffs from for-profits given they know she's ideologically their foe. Furthermore, I'm sure she's not working for peanuts at Columbia and she gets paid big $ in speaking fees ($50k+ per). Give the class-warfare a rest, please.

@BlakeAshby1 @mattyglesias not that "complex" why a wealthy, well-connected man would rather take an eight-figure consulting job at poly than do hard work at a not-for-profit, but okay

@mattyglesias Yes, disappointing, and often self-defeating, the degree to which some on the left create artificial morality standards so they can judge people on the other side of the lines they create. Life is complex, unlike passing judgement

@mattyglesias um 99% of us work for for-profit businesses bc we don't have plausible alternatives, not because we have some sort of ideological belief in their goodness. like is that really what you think? "people work for kalshi bc they think it is good"? lmao

@Ibncorsair @TheWayOfWade @_theFleshPrince Good point, Trump is very subtle and hard to read, there were no signs at all that he might not be completely on the level or a mentally ill narcissist saying whatever he thought would get him a reaction in the moment.

I'm endlessly frustrated with blue state governance, but this analysis is sloppy. Hanania spends a lot of time looking GDP change without ever looking at absolute levels of GDP. If red states have been growing faster for 40 years, why aren't they richer than blue states?

Richard Hanania@RichardHanania

WSJ reports on red states and blue states moving further apart on taxes. We have enough data now to call it. The low tax, low regulation model is superior. richardhanania.com/p/forty-years-…

@libertarian_ass @DeathMetalV Federal revenue as a share of the GDP fell from about 18.7% in 1981 (the last year bf the Reagan tax cuts) to 16.5% in 1984 (when the tax cuts were fully implemented). It fell from 19.8% in 2000 (the last year bf the Bush tax cuts) to abt 15.4% in 2004.

@DeathMetalV What has any president done to gut social security? Every time the tax rate is lowered, the amount of taxes (both absolute and as a percentage of GDP) has gone up.

@M4rcieBandwidth @SpecialPuppy1 Yes, except CA Ds actually are pretty good abt innovating with policy and convincing people that our tax dollars are being used effectively. That's one of the reasons this aboutface seems so random!

@SpecialPuppy1 Zero willingness to actually innovate with policy, zero confidence in their ability to persuade people that their tax dollars are being used effectively, and infinite willingness to abandon silly things like "consequences" and "economic reality" if they interfere with virality

@SpecialPuppy1 It’s coming from the fact that taxes paid by hardworking private sector employees are used for gold plated jobs and retirement for public union employees, who don’t do their job, are lazy and entitled.

Because 10% of $50,000 means a whole hell of a lot more to that earner than 10% of $500,000 does to the other one. Progressive tax rates make a lot more sense than regressive tax rates, and a flat tax is regressive.
Corbin K. Smith@CorbinSmithNFL

I have a really dumb question: Why can't we just have a flat tax rate for every person? And get rid of the stupid deductions, etc? Just have everyone pay the same rate in the U.S.? It would save us from so many damn problems. And all these idiotic arguments.

@JGONYC @AlZeidenfeld Like, movie stars lived in houses that, in 2026 dollars, cost $700-800k! They vacationed in 900 sq ft tract homes in Palm Springs that they drove to. It was all just extremely different and more equitable.

@JGONYC @AlZeidenfeld This is one of those conventional wisdom takes that's just... wrong. We used to have a marginal income rate in the 90s, and the result, quite simply, was that we didn't produce ultra-super-rich people the way we do now.

Centrists love to use Fetterman to dunk on progressives but the difference is we’ve fully disowned him, admitted we were wrong, and are committed to removing him the first chance we get. Find me a single time when centrists took responsibility for losing two elections to Trump.
