My grandfather had an engineering degree and helped build freeways in the Philippines. Before immigrating, he also had a promising acting career. He was becoming popular and had a bright future ahead of him. He gave it all up to work humble jobs in the United States so his children could have a better life. My grandmother survived the Japanese occupation during WWII. She later told us how she heard her brother crying out as he was buried alive. Her husband (my other grandfather) became one of the first Baptist pastors in the Philippines and spent the rest of his life serving his community and hosting American missionaries. My other grandmother was handpicked as a young woman to personally serve General Douglas MacArthur. Decades later, I grew up in America. Today I work as a software engineer in a male-dominated field. No one told me I couldn't pursue it because I was a woman or because of my race. I had to learn, work hard, and prove my abilities. What terrifies them is he does it without their funding, without their approval, without a single thing they can hold over his head. A man you cannot buy is a man you cannot control. And a man you cannot control who keeps solving the problems you profit from is the most dangerous human alive. They will spend their careers trying to tear him down. Their grandchildren will live in the world he built anyway.

Good point. I guess my heartburn is against a team like Spain (yes, I realize the US has to beat Belgium first, but I don’t see them having the same quality back line as Spain, so US more easily can come back from going down a goal or two). Getting down two goals against Spain would likely be catastrophic.

@AZDad55 @shinguardian They were down a goal and came back to draw, only to loose in the final moment, which in my opinion was a combination of an entree back line/keeper and Trusty unable to walk on his injured ankle. Tho goal came from his side.

Man I've been watching the USMNT a long time. Here are some little things I've picked up on this World Cup that may/may not be interesting (in no order). Nothing new but it suggests Poch gets this team:

He played for Leicester City when they won the Premier League back in 2016 at great surprise to the entire world. Then a year later he moved to Chelsea and they won the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champion’s League and a rash of other titles. And yes, his style was to basically cover the entire field. It would make me tired just watching him hustle for 90 minutes.

As a brand spanking new World Cup fan, we need to talk about the absolute worst rule in all of sports. Offsides! Nobody understands it, and clearly nobody wants it. Why are we punishing ambition? If a forward is fast enough to blow past the defense, reward them! Offsides is just the communism of sports rules, punishing the exceptional to protect the mediocre and the lazy. Like all communism, it must be destroyed!

I hate that the worst aspect of football/soccer has infected basketball now. The NBA is nearly unwatchable. And the WNBA is getting worse. Wish the dipshit ref from last night would go back and review some of the more egregious flopping incidents and hand out cards. FIFA needs to work harder to remove the scourge of flopping from the game.

@AndrewMarchand Love that they didn’t park the bus after the red card, but continued testing and pushing the Bosnian team. Best US team I have seen ever.

All in, if you have been riding with the U.S. team for a long time, it is not just winning, it is how they are playing that is so enjoyable.
