Scots rape survivors face new hell as fresh appeals sent in by rapists following flagship court decision. scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/news/politics/…

An Open Letter to @SharonDowey_ Ms Dowey, I am writing in response to your reported comments in the Scottish Daily Mail article, “Rapists launching bids to quash their convictions every 11 days,” where those seeking to challenge their convictions following the UK Supreme Court ruling were discussed as though their guilt is beyond question. It is those comments - and the tone in which you made them - that compels me to write to you. I am not writing to you as a campaigner at this moment, but as a woman whose life has been torn apart by a system that you appear willing to speak about so casually. So I will ask you plainly: Why are you so willing to dismiss and degrade the pain, trauma and lived experience of families like mine?? My fiancé is currently serving a sentence that I firmly believe is unsafe. I have seen firsthand what was allowed in court - and what was not. Not sexual history, as the media like to misrepresent it - but relevant evidence. Evidence, especially given lack of any evidence from the prosecutions side, that could have challenged credibility, including: - prior false allegations - patterns of behaviour - material that raises serious questions about motives and truthfulness None of it was heard. So I ask you: Do you believe that should never be questioned? Because at least one complainer in my fiance's case had made false allegations before, not once - and I think it's a vital bit of information for the jury to consider before they reach their verdict - don't you think? And after the said complainers were done with my fiancé, they remained free to harass me, our family as well as to do the same to more men and destroy more families. Does that not concern you? Or is the expectation that we stay silent - unless we fit a version of “victimhood” that you are comfortable acknowledging? Let me be absolutely clear: We are victims. We are victims of a system that failed to properly test evidence. Victims of allegations we believe were not truthful. Victims of years lost, stigma carried, and lives put on hold. And yet, we are spoken about as though we do not exist. Your words were not just disappointing - they were deeply insensitive. Because they leave no room for the possibility, or should I say - reality now confirmed by the UK Supreme Court, that some of these convictions may be unsafe. So I ask you again: Are you not concerned that some of these men may be innocent? Are you not concerned about the families living through the consequences of that possibility? You hold a position of responsibility, and your words carry weight. This is about real people. Real families. And a justice system that must be willing to face its own failures. Right now, your words suggest the opposite.
