I watched the Louis Theroux manosphere documentary. I thought this chap “Myron” seemed somewhat familiar, and then I realised… yes, that’s him - I studied moral philosophy with him at Trinity College, Cambridge. I recall he took a class on Derrida. Things went wrong after that.

There’s a moment in this clip where you can practically see Myron Gaines shrink in real time, his bravado evaporating as Louis Theroux calmly dismantles his views on monogamy. Then comes the awkward recovery attempt: dismissing his girlfriend and telling her to clean the room, trying to reassert control, but the moment’s already passed. The mask slipped, the room saw it, and the “alpha” act suddenly looked very small.

@AimeTim He was a funny one because you could see somewhere he had some level of intelligence and he seemed to be self-editing in places. He looked like he couldn’t agree with himself. Definite outlier but didn’t have him down as a Cambridge grad.

@AimeTim Once had an anonymous troll on this site and I worked out who he was in real life based on who he followed/who they followed. Turns out he was a lecturer in moral philosophy at Oxbridge. I called him, he deleted his account.

@ScrrreamingPink @RafaRuizdeLira @WitsUniversity I went to a lecture of his once and literally understood about 10 words of it. But he was so passionate that I came out feeling it had been time well spent. Just not sure why.

@AimeTim @RafaRuizdeLira I once literally sat at Derrida’s feet when he gave a lecture in a packed room at @WitsUniversity. My PhD supervisor was the facilitator. I spent much of the talk studying Derrida’s shoes.

Latour's '75 PhD: philosophical theology on resurrection exegesis/ontology via Péguy - religious language meeting real being. 90s Wired mashed Gaia + dot-com boom into Teilhard's noosphere: digital salvation. Latour rejected that Cali Ideology hard. Like Adorno never saying "radio," he skirts the digital noosphere while building his own chaotic, terrestrial Gaia. Refusal disguised as detour.

1. Bruno Latour’s work of course is one long "anxiety of influence" in relation to a number of thinkers – Garfinkel, Whitehead, Schmitt, Stengers, Serres, Souriau, etc. But IMO the key one, that unfortunately he only had a few years to engage with before his passing, is Voegelin.
