#BREAKING: Global shipping giant Maersk has suspended all new bookings to and from the Port of Berbera in Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland, dealing a major blow to regional supply chains in the volatile Horn of Africa. In a customer advisory published on Monday, the Danish carrier stated that "effective immediately and due to scheduling changes, Maersk will temporarily suspend acceptance of new bookings to and from the Port of Berbera." The abrupt halt comes amid severe maritime disruptions driven by security threats in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and escalating geopolitical tensions. The suspension heavily impacts neighboring landlocked Ethiopia, which utilizes the port as a vital trade artery. Maersk acknowledged this broader regional fallout in its notice, telling customers: "We understand that you may have relied on our call to Berbera for local gateway cargo as well as for connectivity to neighbouring markets such as Ethiopia." The company sought to reassure clients with shipments already on the water, promising to "ensure that any cargo currently en route is delivered to its final destination as planned." To mitigate the ongoing supply chain disruption, the shipping giant directed clients to alternative maritime hubs, confirming that "our continued services to Djibouti, Mogadishu, and Mombasa remain available to support your logistics needs and ensure connectivity across the region."
