@superj1606 It’s brought into focus that Sikhs are permitted to carry bladed weapons. 😳
‘Good people’ or not, this can’t be allowed to continue.
No religious exceptionalism.
Ban the Kirpan. 😡
@notreallydavid2@benonwine Sadly I think it was. He also wasn’t helped by the cringy footage of him as a teenager addressing the Tory party conference. 🥴
Harry Enfield famously satirized this with his ‘Tory Boy’ character.
That made it hard to shake off, and haunted his credibility from the outset.🤷🏻♂️
@AltFactsUK1@benonwine That stuff was embarrassing, but I felt it was so clearly _not_ him that it didn't really seem to stick. But I'm not the electorate, and I've no feeling for how damaging it was in the eyes of other people.
Who do you think was the GREATEST Prime Minister Britain never had? 🤔🇬🇧
The politician who had the vision, intelligence or leadership… but never quite made it to Number 10.
@notreallydavid2@benonwine I agree.
It’s just a shame he tried to be something he wasn’t initially (the cringy baseball cap..the Theme Park rides…the Notting Hill Carnival appearance…the drinking 14 pints-a-day nonsense). 🤦♂️
Once he WAS himself, he looked Prime Ministerial…but the damage was done. 😔
@AltFactsUK1@benonwine He did as well as anyone could have done against a pre-Iraq Blair with an economic tailwind. I'm not a Conservative supporter, but I'd have put him in a Fantasy Football-type government without hesitation.
@TheCanaryUK I - and I expect the vast majority of the country - had no idea that Sikh’s were permitted to carry a bladed weapon!! 😳
Hopefully this is a watershed, and it leads to a ban.
There should be no religious exceptionalism, full stop. 😡
@Guramitsingh01@Shed1962 I’ve only had good interactions with Sikhs before.
But, I’m sorry, bollocks to ALL religious exceptionalism…especially the Kirpan. 😡
@90sfootball Anyone who was around at the time knows how good he eventually became. 🤷♂️
Right up there with Beardsley, Barnes and Gascoigne in terms of natural skill…and just one rung below Hoddle on the ladder.
All far more gifted than the so-called ‘golden generation’. 🙄
@MatthewStadlen Many people genuinely ‘fear’ the ideology of Islam, and what it can do to its believers.
So what?
It’s not ‘race’-based.
So why is this phobia any more of a problem than fearing spiders for example? 🤔
@FritzGschweidl Eventually flourished into a fantastic, world-class player did Waddle.
Give me the England side of 1990 over the so-called ‘golden generation’ any day of the week. 🤷♂️
@robharries83 Hard to believe now that he went into that tournament with a fair bit to prove…and arguably in Platini’s shadow.
He reached his absolute zenith in the semi-final vs Belgium, but Matthaus did a pretty good man-marking job on him in the Final.
Just watched highlights of 🏴 v 🇦🇷 from World Cup ‘86 on iplayer.
First time watching actual highlights (not just the goals).
Never ever seen a player like Maradona before or since, and not likely to.
The first half alone is like a career highlights reel 😂
@1968Tv That’s right a Sunday evening. Never shown, despite the hype and clamour to see Maradona.
Even ITV’s late evening news round-up showed this goal, and Maradona’s free-kick which hit the bar…and that was about all.🤷🏻♂️
The opening game, and first goal of the 1982 World Cup was scored by Erwin Vandenbergh of Belgium in their 1-0 victory over World Champions Argentina.
The match itself was not shown LIVE, or as highlights on British TV.
ITV were allotted the game, but decided against showing it due to the ongoing Falklands War and fear of a public backlash.

@Eeramacaroonbar The ‘golden period’ was between 1970 and 1990 even though the ‘74 and ‘90 incarnations were markedly more dour.
After that, the proliferation of satellite TV coverage meant players became ‘demystified’ and the tournament was robbed of its earlier magic.
Less was more. 🤷🏻♂️
The World Cups between the ages of 8 and 16 will always be the best in your head. Any younger you don't truly understand it yet and any older the magic goes out them.
@Axl_Rockstar@robertmdaws All ‘decent’, but brought alive by Platini when he was conducting the orchestra. 🤷🏻♂️
The minute he departed the stage, France entered a dismal slump and failed to qualify for the next two major tournaments.
They were as big a ‘one man team’ as Maradon’s Argentina. 🤷🏻♂️
@1968Tv Boniek was the best European at this World Cup.
I’ve always said, had he not missed the semi-final vs Italy due to suspension, Poland would have gone on to win the tournament. 🤷🏻♂️
ITV World Cup

A very underrated goal from Poland’s 5-1 victory over Peru, scored by Andrzej Buncol.

On a scale of 1-10 how interested are you re watching the World Cup this summer? It’s a 5 for me. The thing is, unlike from 1970 to 1982 there’s no surprises anymore - we know all of the best South American players. Globalisation of football hasn’t worked well for spectators.
