@GHWTowler @PolitlcsUK @thetimes It is a curiosity that no town or village in the mainland UK has ever been named after a king or queen. Plenty in the Empire. Not sure I'd want to break with this.

🚨 NEW: The proposed names the Government is considering calling its new towns - Elizabethtown (after the Queen) - Pankhurst (after suffragette Emmeline) - Attleeton (after ex-PM) - Athelstan (first King of England) - Seacole (after nurse Mary) [@thetimes]

@AuronMacintyre Except these 'Fremen' have Harkonnen levels of oppression against their own people. Analogy breaks down pretty rapidly👎

Iran is currently Paul Atreides standing on top of the pre-spice mass with the Water of Life threatening to bring all travel in the empire to a halt I know this is nerdy but trust me this is the perfect analogy

@tc1415 I don't see VS projects break every update fortunately. I compare the experience to Android Studio where I have to update apps every 9 months or so. Everything breaks from the gradle to new compile errors and it's a days work to rebuild. I dread it.

I hate Visual Studio with a passion. But, I've just threatened, bullied, hassled, and otherwise forced it into understanding a very weird scenario and it "just works". I think... At least until tomorrow!

Wrath Of Gnon
Wrath Of Gnon@wrathofgnon·
The traditional way of laying slates, tiles, or flag, on roofs was by "torching" the bettens: laying down a sacrificial layer or clump of lime, hair, and sand, that would keep the tile attached and help it resist wind, but most importantly to have the torch take on all the rain and snow that got inside the roof before it could reach the battens. Sensible, sustainable and practical using materials and skills that were readily available everywhere. You still see it used in some roofs even with modern materials, and in Japan it is standard for all tiled roofs.

@jamesd_graham I'm wondering if all the people who chose not to have kids because of 'overpopulation', 'climate' and the 'state of the world' will enthusiastically euthanise themselves when the chance comes.

@DanNeidle It is not hard to compare a snap shot of the same database five months apart. They know exactly what the churn is in the data and can estimate the extra churn. I know they won't release that analysis though.

Companies House has put out a statement confirming that, for five months, every company in the UK was vulnerable to the simple exploit we identified on Friday. It enabled anyone in the world to view and change their company details.

Committee for Academic Freedom
🚨 BREAKING: Another win for #academicfreedom! After intervention from the Committee for Academic Freedom (CAF), Plymouth Marjon University has restored the emeritus title of Dr David Harris, which was withdrawn last year after he published a critique of critical race theory. Internal emails secured via a Subject Access Request (SAR) show senior administrators describing Professor Harris’s research as “controversial” and suggesting the university should “sever ties”. CAF challenged the decision as procedurally improper and inconsistent with the terms under which his emeritus title had originally been awarded. The university has now reversed course and reinstated the title. As our Research Manager Freddie Attenborough told The Telegraph: “The episode raises serious questions about how easily lawful academic research can end up being labelled ‘controversial’ inside university administration, with damaging consequences for the individuals involved.” Professor Harris isn’t the first emeritus scholar we’ve had to defend — and we doubt he’ll be the last. 🙏 Much of CAF’s work, from supporting members in difficult cases to holding universities to account for breaches of #freespeech law, is only possible because of donations from supporters. If you’d like to help us continue and expand this work in defence of academic freedom, you can donate here: donorbox.org/support-the-co… 📩 Subscribe to our newsletter to see how CAF is pushing back against free speech breaches across UK universities: afcomm.org.uk/updates-from-t… 📰 Read the full story in The Telegraph here: telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/03/1…

@liturgicalben @ALucieSmith Some of the best TV that's stuck with me was Parliament Channel with @Jacob_Rees_Mogg chasing Nick Clegg all over the place with history lessons about Queen Charlotte's troubles, to name one highlight😅 Wish I could find those debates.

@liturgicalben @ALucieSmith That was fun wasn't it, the Succession to the Crown Act 2013. Amendments to acts going back to the 14c. Be hilarious seeing the Green Party attempt it.

@nw_nicholas The UK has the most labyrinthine, layered, exception coated quagmire of a tax regime, so tell me again about resources, especially for small businesses. Simplification isn't taken seriously. If the courts are backed up with challenges perhaps we lost the plot twenty budgets ago

When people say "his tax avoidance is legal" all that means is that it hasn't been challenged in court by HMRC who don't have the resources, because tax avoidance isn't taken seriously.

The area where England most obviously fails to live up to its billing is that I've been to dozens of quaint villages and *still* haven't been murdered. #Disappointed

@worstall The culture is tuned to this. Hence the trope in all recent fantasy films and probably books, that the best king is the man 'who didn't want to be king'. Even Jackson's LOTR nods to this with his humble Aragorn. Ambition is suspicion. "I was persuaded to run" mantra.

Ooooh, no, it's worse than that. Power corrupts - so good people are turned bad when they gain power in a socialist system. Sure, sure, the first claim is true too - which power mad loon wouldn't try to climb the greasy pole under socialism? But it's also worse than that.
Nick Tyrone@NicholasTyrone

A huge flaw in socialist thinking is the assumption that only really, really good people will be in charge of everything under socialism, when in fact, it almost always elevates the very worst people to positions of immense power.

@HCH_Hill "Govern for everyone" means giving a £12k grant to Kneecap. Everyone knows what "govern for everyone" means. Quite explicit and has been demonstrated over and over.
