The night before Adrian Rogers was elected president in 1979 and the Conservative Resurgence was kicked off, his sermon was titled, "The Devil's Fib of Women's Lib." It was a sermon against female pastors. The entire inerrancy debate started over female pastors. And at this year's SBC meeting, the topic was back on the table as though this "reform" didn't already happen. Now, they were told to come back next year to finish the reform. The SBC establishment has no interest in genuine reform, and it doesn't need to pretend otherwise - it just needs to make sure the people who want reform never quite give up and leave. Leaving is the one thing the establishment actually fears, because leaving means taking your church's Cooperative Program dollars with you, and those dollars are what fund the entire apparatus. Its job is to keep reformers inside the tent, hopeful enough to stay, frustrated enough to keep fighting, but never frustrated enough to walk. That is where Albert Mohler comes in. When the conservative base gets hot enough that defection starts to look like a real possibility, somebody makes a call, Mohler steps to the microphone, puts on his dissident costume, and leads a charge. The charge produces something - maybe a resolution, a vote, a strongly-worded statement - that looks enough like progress to cool the room down. Then the meeting adjourns, and everybody is told they have to come back next year to finish the job, where amendments will be added to an already worthless resolution. They come back.
