build what people actually want, not what the CEO dreams. Legless avatars never stood a chance against real social VR :)))
Hedgie@HedgieMarkets

🦔 Meta is shutting down Horizon Worlds on Quest headsets, with the service ending entirely on June 15. The company sent emails to users today announcing the shutdown. Horizon Worlds will continue only as a mobile platform after that date. This follows Meta laying off 10% of its Reality Labs VR division in February. The service was widely mocked from launch, with legless avatars that became memes, and was quickly overrun by children. VRChat remained more popular despite Meta pumping billions into partnerships with brands and artists like Imagine Dragons and Coldplay. A Forrester analyst told Wired that Meta "was trying to solve for a consumer problem that doesn't exist" and that you can't build a mass social platform on hardware most people don't own or want to wear for long. My Take Meta changed its entire company name to signal commitment to this vision, spent somewhere around $80 billion on Reality Labs since 2020, and the flagship social product couldn't compete with VRChat, which people actually use. The Forrester analyst's point about hardware dependency is right. You can't build a social network that requires people to strap a headset to their face. Social products work because they're frictionless and meet people where they already are. Horizon Worlds required buying a headset, putting it on, and entering a virtual world full of screaming children throwing digital doughnuts. That's not a consumer problem anyone needed solved. I think the pivot to AI and Ray-Ban glasses makes more sense as a strategy, but it's worth noting how much money got burned proving something that seemed obvious to a lot of people from the start. Meta's statement says they still believe in VR as "a critical technology on the path to the next computing platform," which is the kind of thing companies say when they're quietly walking away from a bet that didn't work. Hedgie🤗

my information consumption is now 1/4 talking to ai, 1/4 using ai to curate and summarize tweets, 1/4 using ai to summarize podcast interviews of the smartest practitioners, and 1/4 using ai to summarize old books. the opportunity cost of anything else is far too high, and rising daily.

The AI lab war is starting to look like four different religions: OpenAI: ship the future, learn in public Anthropic: slow down, align it, keep it usable Google: integrate AI into everything on Earth xAI: move fast, break tone norms, dominate attention And the funny part is, they are all right about one piece of the puzzle.

yo so just to recap the week: - google released gemini 3.1 but it disappointed tf out of people who claimed its not as good as they advertise - BUT THEN google dropped an AI song generation model which kinda slaps (Lyria 3) AND a new feature that 1-shots product photoshoots putting photographers (and fashion models) out of a job (Google Pomelli) - Microsoft pioneered a way to STORE DATA ON GLASS - stores data for up to 10,000 fucking years (🤯) and way cheaper than using silica. - Taalus fused an ai model DIRECTLY into silicon processing 17,000 tokens PER SECOND which is 17X faster than openai’s quickest model but 10 TIMES CHEAPER than nvidia blackwell gpus. (smaller models tho) - Apple is releasing 3 new AI devices: glasses, airpods with cameras and a pendant. - anthropic wiped $10B off the stock market after launching an ai that finds and help fixes security flaws in your code. cybersecurity stocks dumped <1 hour after launch. - BUT THEN Pentagon threatened to blacklist anthropic for failing to provide them uncensored access to claude. - xAI dropped grok 4.20 spawning 16 specialised ai agents that work together to solve any prompt. the model self-improves EVERY WEEK. - scientists discovered dna in meteorites suggesting humans could’ve originated from outer space (what) - Meta dropped Manus Agents going head-to-head with OpenClaw. - a cardiologist won 3rd-place in anthropic’s hackathon after vibe coding an app that helps his patients understand and act on their medical results. fucking hero. - china announced a cure for diabetes 1 & 2 after creating stem cells that make insulin - Moonshot labs is raising $500M immediately after raising $700M LAST WEEK. - ex-Deepmind researcher raised europes LARGEST ever seed round $1B at $4B back right as europe announces $13B new fund to catch up with america. - Stripe’s ai agents autonomously merged 1300 pull requests (up 30% from last week) suggesting top companies are now recursively improving using AI. dear f*cking goodness GOODNIGHT

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn 🔥
nader dabit@dabit3

I've been thinking (and worrying) a lot about how AI will affect things, and I've drawn some conclusions that will drive my own career and thought process over the next few years and I thought I'd share. Humans have always been orchestrators, of knowledge and ideas and tools, we learn a bunch of things and interconnect them to do new or more powerful or valuable things. Technology has always advanced and the new abstractions usually just make us more powerful *as orchestrators* (important). I've realized is that the orchestration layer has changed a lot with AI. You obviously can't just be a C++ or TypeScript orchestrator (coder) anymore and expect to be around a few years from now, you need to move up and learn more / new skills that can be composed, and if you do you can be even more valuable than you were in the past. And orchestration has a lot to do with creating. Creativity isn't about conjuring something from nothing, it's more like being a receiver or antenna, picking up on what's already floating in the collective atmosphere and filtering it through your unique perspective (maybe this is essentially refining taste?). The way to increase inputs to our brain is to learn more, to widen the breadth of what we're learning, and importantly to do it consistently. People talk about taste and agency, but I think the people who will win over the next few decades will simply be the most avid learners. This is already true but it feels like it's just speeding up. I'll end with one of my favorite quotes that seems more and more true every day: "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."

People aren’t ready for how much the world will change in the next 5 years. Self-driving cars are basically ready and are mostly being held back by regulators. Software engineers barely write their own code anymore. Humanoid robots are far more advanced than the public realizes. One person with AI is already more productive than three without. AI video creation is moving at insane speed, and soon human creators will be obsolete AI-driven biotech will cure diseases before we even feel symptoms. Solar and battery costs are falling rapidly, and the shift from scarcity to abundance will only accelerate progress. The speed of innovation will only accelerate, and many jobs will simply disappear.

morning routine before jan 2026: wake up. check prices. waste 15min scrolling twitter. "that's enough". go work out for an hour. breakfast. morning routine after jan 2026: wake up. check output of coding agent that ran overnight. spend 15min fixing bug. get addicted. build more shit. 3 hours gone. "fuck i haven't worked out or eaten anything yet". swapped one addiction for another.

Peter Steinberger is joining OpenAI to drive the next generation of personal agents. He is a genius with a lot of amazing ideas about the future of very smart agents interacting with each other to do very useful things for people. We expect this will quickly become core to our product offerings. OpenClaw will live in a foundation as an open source project that OpenAI will continue to support. The future is going to be extremely multi-agent and it's important to us to support open source as part of that.

"permanent underclass" has never felt more real Yesterday, Anthropic dropped opus 4.6-fast, & listen to this: with pricing of more than 200$ per 1M token output (they were generous (?) enough to hand-out 50$ free credits to the community though, check claude.ai/settings/usage to claim, u've got a week) if u've been vibe-coding with ClaudeCode like me, u know how fast those tokens stack up wen u're building agents or iterating on features. at those prices, v're talking easy 5 figures per month for heavy usage ppl think they need to always use the frontier models though, nope, here's the thing, the free models r getting stronger by the day (also, many emerging platforms offer strong commercial models for free simply to attract devs, which results in more/better training data for newer models) I recently noticed moonshot Kimi 2.5 is free via opencode (x.com/opencode), OC is basically ClaudeCode's OS competitor, being used by 2M+ devs monthly (I guess) (the point is, interest is real) and yes, actually free, basically no API key needed, & Kimi 2.5 is a very solid model for both dev & agentic/tool calling tasks x.com/Hartdrawss/sta… obviously the experience is not as smooth as a commercial app like ClaudeCode, but also u r not locked into Anthropic's eco (not ur weights, not ur brain) also, if u want to use the same model in OpenClaw, u can set it up via nvidia build (build.nvidia.com/moonshotai/kim….) for free compute x.com/mernit/status/… In the last post, I was very skeptical about agentic security on local OS, guuud news is the community is moving fast there too (v r still very paranoid with new skills though, u can never be sure wen it comes to prompt injection) x.com/openclaw/statu… basically, every skill is scanned wen published on clawhub (clawhub.ai) now, what I am doing on top of that is using skill-scanner (clawhub.ai/bvinci1-design…) to check the skill before setting it up (this one is published by Cisco, so, solid) This is the most fun I am having spending time behind a computer since early 2021, with these strong free models & open source agentic setups, u can basically do anything now
