One man watches a franchise in reverse order; the other doesn't watch it at all. Mike Harris & Brad Rogers prove the best place to begin is the end.

The world's greatest botanist died of starvation in a Soviet prison. His crime: refusing to say plants worked the way Stalin needed them to. 🧵

The Siege of Leningrad lasted 872 days without supply lines. Hundreds of thousands of people starved. The Vavilov Institute sat in the middle of it. Inside: seeds. Outside: starvation. The scientists who worked there chose to die rather than eat the collection. Dmitry Ivanov starved to death surrounded by bags of rice. Alexander Stchukin died at his desk next to peanuts he never touched. They understood that what they were protecting wasn't a museum. It was the future.

Soviet secret police arrested Vavilov in August 1940, during a botanical expedition in Ukraine. The charges: espionage, sabotage, leading an "anti-Soviet" scientific organization. In interrogation, he was asked to confess that genetics was a capitalist conspiracy. He refused. "We shall go to the pyre, we shall burn, but we shall not retreat from our convictions." He was sentenced to death. The sentence was later commuted to twenty years of labor camp. He died of starvation in a Saratov prison on January 26, 1943. This is what happens when political authority supersedes scientific inquiry.

As a testament to Borlaug's humility, there's a story that he drove his car to work at Texas A&M's Borlaug Center on a Aggie home game Saturday. A parking officer told the Nobel Prize winner he wasn't permitted to park the building named in his honor, and he quietly complied.

There was a time when common sense existed in that room. 🔴 1978 Oscars: Vanessa Redgrave used her acceptance speech to attack "Zionist hoodlums”. Minutes later, Paddy Chayefsky, WWII veteran wounded at the Battle of the Bulge, takes the stage after winning for Network. 👉 His message: “The Oscars are not a platform for antisemitic political propaganda”.

@notjessewalker In his defense, his imitation of your speaking voice is pitch perfect. Assuming you were a 67 IQ Edwardian with a case of Hapsburg jaw.

Oh, man; you've got to go to the 22-minute mark here: youtube.com/watch?v=ougI63… It's not the single dumbest critique of anything I've written—I think that'll always be the piece at LRC by a guy who thought I had called Huey Long a libertarian—but it's a strong contender for #2.

That time Jesse Jackson was on the campaign trail and some of his comments were not well received. So SNL & Eddie Murphy stepped in to help "smooth" it over.... Rest easy, Jesse Jackson 💙🙏🏾🕊
