Ukraine has established a kill zone along the front, which makes it extremely difficult for the Russians to advance. Russians call it a drone zone, which extends 10 to 15 kilometers along the frontline. Essentially, within this drone zone, it is nearly impossible for the Russians to move except on foot and at night. And even then, they become targets. Ukraine has made drones its key defensive asset. ‼️This is not a "war fought by the poor," as some disparagingly say about Ukraine. This is a modern war. And Ukraine, over the last few years and right now, is changing the way modern wars are fought. Ukraine is demonstrating an incredible level of technical and technological innovation and adaptation of weapons and defense systems. Ukraine is emerging as a powerful military superpower in the midst of a major war, under the pressure of shelling, and in the face of losses. Ukraine has not just stood its ground; it has adapted and is now taking the war onto the enemy's territory. 📹: The Sun

What if commentators and the rest of us stopped wasting time on describing The Orange’s behaviour? And instead came up with a strategy for how to handle him? Everything about Trump’s behaviour can be explained by his narcissism. What about a concerted global effort to mock him?

@LakotaMan1 Here in Europe, we know the answer, but usually to polite to tell you. What is much more worrying is that no one seems to talk about it. "What do we do about easy-to-fool voters?" - "How do we prevent this from ever happening again?"

Trump blinked. His reputation will not recover from this. As with his climbdown over Greenland, he has almost certainly won no significant concessions. "Art of the deal", my foot. I have never seen such shambolic incompetence from a world leader. I've known parish councillors with a better understanding of statecraft.

@realMaalouf The reason: "We need to feel we are the good ones, and that needs to fit with Marxist narratives. We need a new underclass since the modern domestic working-class doesn't listen to us. Muslims say they are suppressed victims of white colonisation, and they need our help. Amen."

Putin isn't complicated. One of his core beliefs is that Gorbachev was wrong with his "perestroika and glasnost" response to the clearly collapsing USSR, and that MORE repression could have held it all together. As unrest grows, he's going to simply attempt to murder everyone in Russia. Good news for Ukraine is that the troops will be required at home as it'll be too much for Rosgvardiya.

Shocked by the thousands of angry Russians now calling "for rebellion and the overthrow of the government", Kremlin-alligned Russian military blogger "Fighterbomber" says its time for mass prosecutions. The popular blogger further cites that the population is disgruntled over "government lawlessness, about fucked-up officials, about the SVO, about shitty healthcare, about rising prices and taxes, about the stifling of freedoms and the internet".

The absolute best argument against allowing people to become multibillionaires is watching what they actually do with the money. Almost every time an oligarch speaks or acts, they prove why extreme wealth concentration is a catastrophic threat to society

Russia is tightening control over the internet — and preparing for a possible “great crackdown” at home as the war in Ukraine continues — Reuters. Mobile internet is being shut down in major cities, apps blocked, and new laws expand FSB powers over users and communications. 1/

All part of the Trump design to wreck America! American reaearch and ingenuity must be sacrificed so that autocrats can prosper and Putin and Xi's dreams of the US as a third rate power can be fulfilled.
Rush Doshi@RushDoshi

On Tuesday, I testified before the House Homeland Security Committee on China's strides in robotics and AI. I warned that we lost solar, batteries, and EVs -- now we're at risk of losing robotics and AI. If that happens, it would irreversibly change the balance of power. Five points: 1️⃣ China aims to win the next industrial revolution. PRC leaders believe history is shaped by industrial revolutions. The first, steam power, made Britain dominant. The second and third, electrification and mass manufacturing, made America dominant. China is determined to win the fourth. 2️⃣ In robotics, China is already winning. In 2024, China installed 300,000 new industrial robots. America installed 30,000. China now has over 2 million robots in its factories — five times more than the US. A decade ago, it imported 75% of its robots. Today it makes 60% domestically. This year alone, China may spend $400 billion on industrial policy. The entire US CHIPS Act provided $50 billion across multiple years. If we fall behind here, U.S. reindustrialization becomes farfetched. 3️⃣ In AI, we're ahead — but selling off the advantage. China has more energy, more talent, and makes the edge devices. But America still leads because of chips, according to China's own AI companies. US chips are 4-5x better than China's today. We are debating whether to surrender that edge. 4️⃣ We are inviting risks of cyberespionage and catastrophic cyberattacks. PRC law requires its companies to cooperate with intelligence services and never disclose it. Today's robots carry LiDAR, microphones, and cameras — they are mobile surveillance platforms. But the bigger risk is cyberattack. We know China has compromised our power, gas, water, telecommunications, and transportation infrastructure in preparation for cyberattack. We cannot deploy robots in sensitive facilities from the very country targeting those facilities. 5️⃣ Here's what we must do. Extend ICTS rules to cover Chinese robots. Direct CISA to audit where they're deployed in critical infrastructure. Ban federal procurement of Chinese robotics and AI. Strengthen semiconductor export controls. Stop treating American AI companies with more regulatory scrutiny than Chinese ones. And build allied scale in robotics—a trading bloc with preferential terms for the members that can rival China's scale in in the sector. Thanks to @HomelandDemsIt and @HomelandGOP for the hearing on this topic, and grateful to join @MRobbinsAUVSI and colleagues from Scale and Boston Dynamics for a great discussion.

@anders_aslund Yes. He doesn't take responsibility for anything. That is what narcissists do. If people had not been so busy wasting time figuring out the Orange, but instead had talked to experts and read books about "How to handle a narcissist," he may not have been elected a second time.

If you’re looking for some good news, I’ve got some. Just two months ago, I was at the Hryshko Botanical Garden in Kyiv. The photographer and I had gone there to document the impact of Russian attacks on the power grid on the tropical plants. At the time, there were barrels of burning fuel right inside the greenhouse. And the staff were doing everything in their power, day and night, to keep the 50-year-old philodendrons, rare orchids, citrus trees, palms, bromeliads and cacti warm. I came back deeply moved and wrote that I hoped these plants would survive the winter. And someone commented under that post: ‘I hope we all survive it.’ So, yesterday at the opening of a photo exhibition on ecocide, which is being held in a room next to the greenhouse, I finally met its director. They did manage to save everything after all. She spoke gratefully of how many caring people had joined the fight against the cold. Some donated fuel, others generators. And finally, she took me to the garden with the azaleas. She says they’re blooming particularly beautifully this year, as if they were victors.

@Daractenus It's a cult. A cult member's whole self-image is built up around believing in "The Great Leader." The more rational arguments and doubt you throw at them, the thicker the wall of conviction—until, one day, the wall starts cracking. What will cause it? Hard to tell.

Most pollsters continue to put Donald Trump’s approval rating at around 40%. Everything he has done over the past three months, from U.S. citizens getting shot by his Gestapo to the Epstein files, war with Iran, and his threats to annex Greenland, has cost him about 1-2%.

Few things have opened my eyes more than talking to and following exiled Iranians. Many hate Islam. They hate the hijab and the forced worship. They hate Ramadan. The latter brings back memories of hidden chocolate bars in school bags, eaten quickly and quietly in the toilet. 1/5
