Messi had better teammates which made this easier but he also was much better about his movement after making the pass. One of my favorite Messi-isms was the way he would cut inside and use his teammates as like a rebound board to pass off as he drove across the top of the box, which I think made it harder for defenders to engage him physically - if he doesn't have the ball they can't really tackle him
