new project: cleo (kindle + llm) 📚
cleo is an ios app that pairs whatever book you're reading on kindle with an llm (o3) — ask questions, get recaps/summaries, or listen/discuss (think audiobooks but interactive). the llm has context on exactly where you are + the book contents.
best part? no complex setup needed. just link your kindle account and that's it. it just works.

> be me, have a NY state tax issue where I was incorrectly assessed a sizable penalty that is now in collections
> call NY state tax office (Individual Tax Liability Resolution Center) last November to discuss it and file a dispute
> spend 2 hours on hold, and eventually told I would hear a resolution in 30 days from the agent who filed the dispute for me and that a 30-day collections hold would be placed on my account
> call back 20 days later and be told that the original agent never actually filed the dispute because their system was broken/bugged
> speak with new agent who says that she will file the dispute for me, and to check back in another 30 days
> ask to have interest accumulation on the penalty paused while they work on the dispute, especially since the first agent did not properly file the dispute as they said they would
> agent says no, that there is no way to stop interest from accruing and that if the dispute is not resolved in my favor, I will have to pay all of it, and there is nothing I can do
> call back in the new year, only to find that when calling the direct Individual Tax Liability Resolution Center line I was given, no matter what I do in the phone tree, I cannot reach an agent: I either get a 3-minute recorded automated message, or reach a point where I *should* be connected with an agent, only to get a recorded message of "Sorry, all agents are currently busy helping other callers, please try again later"
> every time the "Sorry, all agents are currently busy helping other callers, please try again later", the phone tree automatically hangs up the call and disconnects
> call 11 times over 3 days at all different hours, each for several minutes navigating the phone tree, get the same message and disconnect every time
> find another phone number that is more generic and finally manage to get through to an agent, they connect me through to the Individual Tax Liability Resolution Center directly and I manage to speak with a new agent
> ask for an update on my dispute, told that there is no record of it being filed beyond the note from my call last time
> ask for them to pause interest accumulation on penalties, told the same as last time: no
> agent tells me that the amount is large enough that she cannot do anything herself, and that even her supervisor likely cannot, and that it has to go 'up the chain'
> ask if I can speak with supervisor or someone up the chain, told I cannot, but that the original agent can follow up with me via phone, but that they are not working today so I cannot speak with them now
> ask to have collections action put on hold while the dispute is being resolved, told that I need to speak with a different department for that
> get connected to different department, then as soon as I get through the call gets dropped
> try to call the different department directly, get the same "Sorry, all agents are currently busy helping other callers, please try again later" message and get hung up on by the automated system
> call the main number that worked to get through the first time, talk to an agent, they connect me to the different department, and I get the same "Sorry, all agents are currently busy helping other callers, please try again later" message and get hung up on by the automated system
> call the main number AGAIN and speak to a different agent, explain that i was disconnected last time and ask to be put through directly, told that the agent cannot do that
> after 5 minutes of back and forth, agent says to "try calling every hour and see if you get through at some point" and I inform her this is my 15th time trying
> agent says to keep trying and that they will transfer me over, get transferred, get same "Sorry, all agents are currently busy helping other callers, please try again later" message and get hung up on by the automated system
> now 16 calls deep and 15+ hours on the phone with NY State employees and no closer to any resolution or answer for my problem
> it would have been faster for me to drive to Albany from NYC, talk to people in-person, and drive home, and maybe I would be slightly closer to an answer
This staggering level of incompetence and malicious behavior by the NY State Tax office cannot be allowed to continue. At this point I guess I should be calling senators, but I am truly at a loss as to how to even begin to fix the problem. I have every phone tree memorized, I have begged with NY State Tax agents to help me to no avail, and I am no closer to even beginning to get an answer about a giant erroneously-charged tax bill.

There's a shocking fact about AI that nobody tells you: You can catch up to the public AI research frontier in just 2 weeks. Yes, really.
I've built a $150M annual revenue startup over the last 8 years and If I were to start a company today, I’d drop everything and go all-in on AI.
But like many busy software builders, I felt lost—overwhelmed by the noisy, crowded and fast-moving modern AI landscape. And I wasn’t alone.
So I spent my entire holiday diving deep into AI research—reading 30+ papers, watching hours of lectures, analyzing trends, and catching up to the research frontier.
✨ Here’s what I learned:
- You don’t need months (or years) to catch up.
- You don’t need a PhD or decades of ML experience.
- You need fewer than 20 papers and 2 weeks to understand the major breakthroughs shaping AI today.
It's because the technology is extremely nascent and most techniques that came before are no longer relevant:
- ChatGPT is barely 2 years old and Transformers are only 7 years old.
- Most game-changing discoveries happened within the last 4 years, driven by a few breakthrough ideas, scaling laws, and efficient matrix multiplication.
The biggest secret?
Many groundbreaking AI papers with thousands of citations are surprisingly simple and applied, like adding "let's think step by step" to the prompt, or simply asking the LLM over and over again to improve its answer (Self-Refine).
I realized there are tons of founders and builders in the same boat—wanting to dive deeper into AI but unsure where to start.
I've created an essential AI Guide that helped me catch up, in just 2 weeks, to the frontier of public AI research to figure out where the next opportunities and gaps were:
- Curated list of only the most important papers
- Simple explanations of key concepts
- Clear pathway to understanding the frontier of modern AI
It’s perfect for:
- Founders expanding into AI
- Builders wanting to innovate at the frontier of AI
- Investors looking to separate the signal from the noise

- Comment "AI Guide"
- I'll send you the complete guide
(ps, I’m also teaming up with @VishalVasishth, co-founder of @obviousvc with @ev (focused on large-scale societal impact companies like Twitter, Medium, Beyond Meat), to host a small meetup to discuss what's working and needs to be solved in the AI stack in SF. Message me if you're interested)
