The world has millions of small tragedies every day. The question to ask is "Why am I being asked to sympathize with *this* person, and not *that* one?" It usually answers itself. Performative cruelty is a way to forcibly reject manipulation. Not the only way, but it works.

There's something deeply evil about saying that someone is bad and unlovable while simultaneously being mad at them for not trying to date. You want them to suffer endless rejection and failure, and if they find some sort of peace they ruin that for you. Pure sadism.
