This is really a stunning paper. Cyanobacteria exposed to shorter days (in the lab) "rewire" their membrane lipids to anticipate cold weather. When those cells are plunged into cold water, they have "two or three-times higher survival" than cells exposed to longer days.

Here, Koch lab reports on bacterial ribosome hibernation. They show that the membrane-tethering hibernation factors YqjD/ElaB/YgaM, discovered by Wada in E. coli, are widely conserved in proteobacteria and likely target the ribosomal peptide tunnel👍 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

We designed a motif that makes the expression of YFP strongly EttA-dependent. This motif demonstrates that EttA's activity is only evident when the motif is present within the first 30 amino acids of the encoded sequence.
