It's time for Monday trivia! What is the name of the black boxes on the device in the bottom left corner of this picture of the wireless office on board HMCS Sackville?

@HMCSSACKVILLE1 Yes they were in use until 1982. Radio officer was W.B. Calnen.

Yes they are crystals. The setup is indeed CM11 transmitter, receiver, and antenna coupler. The crystal storage box indicates some of the crystals were Defense Research Establishment Atlantic, so the set may have been in use until 1982.

@AwesomeBiota Actually the sound of the main engine isn't as loud as you might think. There was lots of sighing and small spurts of steam, a rumble of the bearings, and clicks and clacks from the valve train. Much more soothing than the racket from the generator's diesel. :-)

They just turned on the diesel generator (old original, still works!) and sweet lord. This isn’t as loud as the engine would have been, and it’s also in the engine room. Normally the ship is hooked up to shore power.

It’s 7:35am on a Sunday (only minor grumbles!), and it’s time for the adventure of a lifetime. Let’s gooooo!!! 🛥️

@HMCSSACKVILLE1 @WorldofWarships I sailed on Sackville frequently from 1976 to 1982 when she was retired. I estimate I spent 1-1/2 years of my life aboard her. We had 3 vets in the crew who had served in corvettes.
