When I see celebrities trending, I have one of only 2 reactions these days: 1) What now **eye roll** 2) Oh, no! Please don’t be dead!!!

@JoyceCarolOates I owned an independent bookshop. Every writer within 100-mile radius came in to demand I carry their books. I stocked the books of the local writers who shopped in my store. Every inch of a bookshop’s shelf space is valuable real estate. It’s a tough business.

a dear friend who was a distinguished poet used to complain bitterly about local bookstores that promoted bestsellers & not books of poetry; when it was gently pointed out to him that bestsellers kept the bookstores open so that his poetry books could be sold as well, & that without the bestsellers there would be a Starbucks in place of the store, he seemed utterly confounded & had no reply. yes it is true that "young white male writers" have a difficult time finding publishers but this is because--(surprise!)--male readers don't support "young white male fiction writers" to the degree that female readers will support writers of fiction whoever they are but skewing to the female for reasons of identification, empathy. most bookstores are not non-profits. they are actually hoping to sell books. if you don't buy their books, don't complain that publishers are reluctant to publish those books which you are not buying.
Joyce Carol Oates@JoyceCarolOates

the fact that I have pointed this out certainly suggests that I "care." however, the situation is complicated: publishers are reluctant to publish work by some demographics because those demographics don't buy books to the degree that others do. male readers will purchase non-fiction books but not so much fiction; within nonfiction, they favor history, military, some science. male readers are much less likely to purchase fiction. for this reason, publishers/editors favor female writers because (they hope) these writers will attract readers. tell the truth: how many works of fiction have you purchased this past year? how many by white male writers? if you don't help to keep literary writing alive, why are you complaining about its decline?

I found that there were different phases to having a chronic illness. 1) Suffering through the viral illness but presuming it would pass. 2) Realising I wasn't getting better. 3) Looking to doctors for help. 4) Much later, being alarmed as I accepted help wasn't there.

@CovidDataReport I am covid cautious by necessity, and I am tired. I would like to feel optimistic, but I don’t, about anything. This year has broken me.

So with covid wastewater and positivity rates dropping to such low levels not only in the US but other countries are you feeling any more optimistic? After BA.3.2 I am not hearing of anything down the line yet which is rare usually by now the next subvariant is lined up.

@DrNeilStone About half. I have had phenomenal docs, and docs that messed up my health. Can’t predict in advance. Now, I am suspicious of anything a new doc says, and my trust is hard to win. I wish I knew to be wary 20 years ago when a simple medical procedure damaged me.

@DrBrittaniJ My neurologist is in solo private practice, I file insurance claims on my own. Same charge for an office visit whether I stay for 10 minutes or an hour. My first visit was a COMPREHENSIVE 2.5 hour appointment. Best doctor ever.

I think the average person would be shocked to know how much power physicians DON’T have over how we practice medicine. Every physician I know absolutely despises 15-minute visits.

It’s so hard, after a good day, when you indulge in the fleeting thought that maybe you are back to “normal” … to then wake up the next day with barely the energy to shower. God I hate #chronicfatigue and measuring spoons of energy. Today I have half a teaspoon. #fuckcancer

How are we supposed to dispose of medication? Putting it in the garbage seems like a bad idea as it could get into the water system etc. My @cvspharmacy won’t accept them. So I have an entire nightstand drawers filled with unused Rx’s. Shouldn’t there just be a dropbox at every pharmacy counter?
