At the end of his first season at Ohio State in 1951, having suffered a 4-3-2 record, some who may have been your fringe grandparents were hanging "GOOD-BYE WOODY" banners all over Columbus, and one disgruntled fan kept calling Woody's house (he had a listed number) at 4am every morning. Woody's wife Anna would pick up the phone:
"I'm just calling to say good-bye," the lunatic caller would say.
"We're not going anywhere," Anna would reply sweetly.
"Oh yes you are," the lunatic would insist.
The lunatic was, of course, wrong about that.

Think the demand for a winning football program at The Ohio State University is new? Consider that OSU Coach Woody Hayes' immediate predecessor, Wes Fesler, quit the job after just three seasons, citing "Columbus' stress on winning."
"The fans have forgotten that college football is a game for kids, played by kids against kids. Successful seasons seem to be the only thought in mind now, and that means winning nine of nine games or ten of ten."
He was reportedly on the edge of a nervous breakdown when he left.
The year was 1950.
